The Alice Tax
Having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. —1 Timothy 6:8

Author Calvin Trillin's wife, Alice, held a unique view of income tax. She believed that "after a certain level of income, the government would simply take everything." She thought there should be a limit on how much money people were allowed to keep for themselves. Writing in The New Yorker, Trillin said of his wife, "She believed in the principle of enoughness."

In Mark 12, Jesus avoided a carefully laid trap by telling His questioners to "render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's" (v.17). When Jesus watched people making their offerings to the temple treasury, He commended a woman who would have been considered foolish for her extravagance. "This poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood" (vv.43-44).

Jesus placed more importance on wholehearted love for God than on wholesale concern over material needs. His tranquil attitude toward money and possessions was based on trusting His Father to supply each day's needs. "Your Father knows the things you have need of" (Matt. 6:8).

Enoughness. What a concept!

He clothes the lilies, feeds the birds;
Would He to you, then, pay less heed?
Look up to Him with prayerful heart,
He will supply your every need. —Renfrow

Contentment is not getting what we want but being satisfied with what we have.

That was so unexpected and FUNNY. I sent the link to several friends. Thanks for the ping.

And Welcome to Amy's Place, Cardhu. I have had company so haven't been able to post for the past couple days, but I did go back and look at some of the PP presentations that you've posted. Very nice!

Kitty, I was browsing the thread and came upon your wonderful news about your new fur-friend! I think God has found a perfect home for him. I can't imagine life without a special dog or cat in it. I hope, for you and for your dog, that this will be the first of many happy days together!

I can't wait for pictures!

Also, still looking forward to photos of Mr. KM, Amy. How's he doing?

BTW, today is my Chachi's THIRD birthday. We are going to make it an extra special day for him. :-)

Oh, and Kitty, if you start having problems with your dog barking a lot, I have a tried and true, easy way to break them of it. Chachi is a bit high-strung and tends to bark at the least little sound....sometimes imaginary sounds. I now just have to say "quiet" to him and he stops immediately. Freepmail me. :-)

Naked!

I just wanted to use the word, to tell the naked truth,
I sure got your attention, though, by being so uncouth.
We’ve come to have an attitude of shame about our nature,
Which seems to be affected somehow by its nomenclature.

There’s little then to stand between the naked and the nude,
Except that one’s an artful pose and in the other, someone’s rude.
The word itself is strange you know, I mean, for goodness sake,
Though people end up naked no one ever seems to nake.

Naked we came into the world, and naked we shall leave it,
Shorn of our possessions and our pride, you can believe it.
To stand before the Lord with only what we’ve done to show,
There is no hiding then from what the Lord will surely know.

An unimpressive specimen, denuded of its glory,
And unlikely to impress with any kind of cover story.
But still forgiving is our Lord of all the things that we may lack,
And we presume to know this much because he hasn’t sent us back.

Wow! I have never seen anything like that. Some of those houses were castles! And some of the little islands were only big enough for one house.

Do you have any idea why the music isn't playing for me? The slide-show opens in a power point window, but I don't see any preference I can set that will play the music. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.

I have made some, and others I may add music or translate as they are sent to me by Spanish friends or obtain them elsewhere.

The next one I will post is one is one I made of an unusual Marina in Puerto Vanus in Southern Spain not too far from Marbella.

I hope Amy´s Place will like my choices.

Perhaps you did not read the instructions.. :)

Check Post #1354

You say it opens in a PowerPoint window - you have to right click select FULL SCREEN and back up to the first slide. If it is in Powerpoint itself then you can select Slide Show then View Show
