“Looking back, Melinda Doolittle should have won”

I liked her too. Has she done anything since AI?

Song Sung Blue is one of my least favorite songs by Neil Diamond. Too simplistic, kind of sing song, like Ring Around the Rosy. jmo

How do people feel about “Cracklin’ Rosie” or “Kentucky Woman?” I've been going through a long list of songs reading the lyrics and yes, “Song Sung Blue,” is way too sing song.

Melinda Doolittle’s First Album Debuts In June

http://www.northcountrygazette.org/2008/04/02/melinda_album/

Last year at this time, Melinda Doolittle was appearing weekly on American Idol.

Melinda finished third in last year’s American Idol competition and has been busy touring and recording ever since.

The former professional back-up singer from Brentwood, Tenn., has been on tour as part of Dreyer’s Slow-Churned Light Ice Cream American Idol Tour and has a new album scheduled to debut in June.

The tour was part of a promotion on the American Idol web site (www.americanidol.com) that allowed fans to vote for their five favorite ice cream flavors with a chance to win an in-home ice cream party for 25 people with Melinda performing live. Doolittle is a spokeswoman for Dreyer’s ice cream, which comes in several “American Idol” flavors. Doolittle describes her debut album, which comes out in June, as “kind of eclectic.”

“I’m a soul girl at heart,” she said. “So it’s got soul. It’s got some groove to it. But I like that little rock edge. So, it’s a little gritty.”

She has also just released a single online of “My Funny Valentine”, available for download at iTunes.

She was my favorite last year...the only news I heard of her was when she traveled to Africa with Laura Bush to fight malaria.

Young People Who Rock

She auditioned for "American Idol" with the Stevie Wonder song "For Once in My Life." We know what happened next. Melinda Doolittle finished as the third place finalist of the sixth season of the show.

But what "Idol" fans might not know is that Melinda Doolittle isn't content with limiting herself to entertainment. During her rapid rise to stardom she threw her support behind a cause that wasn't so "celebre" -- malaria. With Malaria No More, Doolittle traveled with first lady Laura Bush to Zambia and other countries in the "malaria belt" of Africa to raise awareness of the disease.

She believes that malaria can be eradicated -- with medicine to treat the disease and with insecticides and bed nets to prevent it in the first place. Doolittle's goal is to help eliminate malaria once and for all in her lifetime.

Found this on the White House site:

President George W. Bush, Mrs. Laura Bush and guests listen to singer Melinda Doolittle perform Tuesday evening, Nov. 13, 2007 in the East Room of the White House, during a social dinner in honor of America's Promise-The Alliance for Youth.

President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush join singer Melinda Doolittle, center, and members of the World Children's Choir on stage Tuesday evening, Nov. 13, 2007 in the East Room of the White House, during the social dinner in honor of the tenth anniversary of America's Promise-The Alliance for Youth.

They usually get a list of 20 songs to choose from. It would be nice to know if they are restricted to a certain time frame or if the lists covers all decades.

I like most of his songs but what the contestants need are songs that will help them showcase their vocals. I'm not sure that either one of those songs will really do that, but maybe. There's just so many songs. It would be nice if we could at least see which 20 they have to choose from.

If that's what Simon considers to be a great talent then he has no business judging others, LOL

Cook is the only one left with the low register chops to sing Song Sung Blue, IMO. Brooke could do justice to the story of the song, but I think she’d have to rearrange it too much so she could handle it.

I’m not sure about I Am I Said. Who could do it?

American Idol Winner Taylor Hicks To Perform National Anthem At Aaron’s 499 At Talladega

http://www.paddocktalk.com/news/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=81596

Taylor Hicks, who won the fifth-season of the American Idol competition, will sing the National Anthem prior to the Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, April 27 at Talladega Superspeedway.

The 31-year-old Hicks, born in nearby Birmingham Ala. and raised in Hoover, captured more than 63 million votes to win the fifth season of American Idol, which has a tradition of producing today’s greatest singing stars.

“We’re proud to have one of Alabama’s favorite sons in Taylor Hicks perform the National Anthem prior to the Aaron’s 499,” Talladega Superspeedway President Rick Humphrey said. “With his raspy, soulful voice, race fans should expect a rousing rendition of the National Anthem.”

After winning the fifth season of American Idol in 2005, Hicks’ first single “Do I Make You Proud” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard’s Hot 100, the Single Sales chart and the Pop 100 with more than 190,000 copies sold in its first week of release. His self-titled major-label debut album arrived in late 2006 and “Live at the Workplay Theatre,” a concert album recorded in summer 2006, was released in 2007.

Another Idol Update

Former ‘Idol’ Kevin Covais hits the big screen

http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/movies/ny-etkev0402,0,7519554.story

” American Idol” alum Kevin Covais — as a high school junior, he finished 11th in the show’s 2006 iteration — has left his native Levittown for Los Angeles, all the better to nab acting gigs, like the teen comedy “College,” due in theaters in late August.

Covais’ acting debut, “College,” with co-stars Drake Bell and Andrew Caldwell, follows a trio of high school seniors who visit a nearby university as pledges with the promise of immersing themselves in the excesses of fraternity life. Covais’ character is a “nerdy, reserved” type named Morris, “and all I can say is that mayhem ensues,” he says.

So does nudity, something he regrets may keep his younger fans out of the theater. Still, it’s that bird in the hand: “While I would love to do family-friendy things, this was the opportunity that came my way.”

While “College” is rated R, Covais maintains that he’s keeping his West Coast lifestyle in the PG precincts. While he apartment-hunts, he’s staying in a spare bedroom at the home of fellow “Idol” grad Ace Young.

“He’s like an older brother to me,” Covais says of the 27-year-old Grammy-nominated songwriter, vigorously disputing rumors that he’s benefitting from Young’s “womanizing leftovers.” “That’s really not my way,” he says, adding that he’s “currently a one-woman guy.”

He hopes his career, however, will not be so monogamous. Music, which is what brought him into the public eye on “American Idol,” is where he hopes to return — eventually.

Yep - I don’t like Song Sung Blue, Forever in Blue Jeans, and a few others I can’t think of right now.

Agree - I went to a concert featuring Kelly and Clay right after Season 2, and it was very well- and enthusiastically attended. THe next tour (Jukebox?) didn’t come to my area, and Clay’s fan base has been unbelievably dedicated. I was disappointed with his last non-holiday CD, and hope the next one will be better.

After seeing him, Kelly and Carrie in concert, the contestants with the out-size personalities (a little too big for TV sometimes) do just fine in the arena.

Daughtry is spectacular - I took my son to see that season’s Idol tour in Sacramento - he got THE biggest ovation of the night.
