The Pharisees (of which Paul was a member) were stunned by the way Jesus stripped down the interpretations of the law to get to the root meaning. The core of the law was embodied in the person of Jesus. The weight of the application of the law that killed the spirit of the law was removed by Jesus.

That's because Jesus placed 'moral' law above 'ceremonial' law. This is why some 'thought' that he 'broke' the law. You have to remember that Jesus taught in a period of transition, during the development of different schools of interpretation in Judaism. It is inevitable that there would be variant interpretations of the Law as recorded in the Gospels. With the Pharisees, Jesus accepts the Law of the Sabbath; he differs only in the interpretations of that law as found in the Oral Law. The Oral Law detailed the many conditions that allowed for the breaking of the Sabbath.

For example, the Rabbis of the Hillel School of Pharisaism declared that is was permissible to violate the Sabbath to preserve life, that in doing so you violate a Sabbath to ensure the observance of future Sabbaths. This was accepted interpretation by the Hillel Pharisees of which Jesus belonged, but not to the Shammai Pharisees or the Sadducees who were ultra-strict, always adhering to the 'letter of the Law' over the 'spirit of the Law' (Oral Law). It has been said that in elevating the spirit of the Law over the letter of the Law one can understand the minimizing of the ceremonial laws. But it is not that simple according to Jesus. As gentiles, we are not aware that the Oral Law brought a proper understanding to the Written Law if matters were in doubt.

Mat 23:23
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier [matters] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

These (least commandments) you ought to have done, without neglecting the others (grave-weightier commandments). In drawing such a contrast, Jesus does not annul the Written Law (613 laws), nor even the ceremonial laws; he only brings priority to the obedience of all the Laws. Jesus did not stand against the Written Law or Oral Law, nor even Pharisaism, but only against the elevation of the 'letter of the Law' above the 'spirit of the Law'.

Back to AI, I have to confess that I am a little concerned. I'm hoping that Neil Diamond doesn't come out on stage looking like Kenny Roger's and sounding like Barry Gibb with false teeth and singing like he should have retired years ago. Seriously, there have been some mentors that I wish had just mentored and not sung. Its sad to hear how some can no longer sing like they used to. jmo

But they do have these nice balloon machines on the walls, so it's not all bad

LMAO!!! We have machines, too, but they don't shoot out anything fun like balloons.

DC could also do a great job with this version of “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon”:

"My sister considers the song and the whole play blasphemous."
"The song makes me uneasy too."

I totally understand and respect the opinions folks have about all things Jesus Christ Superstar related. I would like to briefly share 'my story'. I was friends with our preachers kid and her mom took us into Houston to see Snow White. It was sold out so she took us to see Jesus Christ Superstar.

I grew up going to church and I've glued many a Bible character cutout to popcicle sticks. Watched King of Kings and The Greatest Story Ever Told yearly on TV. For me, it all fell into place during the movie. I was a kid, don't remember the exact year the movie came out. The term '40 lashes' never really sunk in. I sobbed. I did not know the roles Pilate or Herrod played or even Judas! Many years later my Husband took me to Pensacola to see it on stage. Ted Neely as Christ and the same actor as Judas. That was cool.

Like I said, I understand and respect those who have a problem with the movie, yet take heart! For me, it only enhanced and promoted what is the greatest joy in my life...my relationship with Christ! :)

Yeah, and Larry Craig is doing a tapdance in the next stall.

The mens rest room is starting to sound like a really scary place.

I agree. I think he was putting on an attitude in the very beginning, “the tough rocker guy”, the hair even had more attitude, lol, but he has dropped that and is now himself. His voice is superb!!

Thanks for posting the songs...listening to “Hello Again” right now and have chills for Brooke at the piano. I need to brush up on my Neil Diamond...I forgot what great songs he had. ;)

No problem. There's so many youngsters in the thread that I thought they might like to listen to a few of his songs. He is so versatile and a tremendous lyracist. We just don't have many songwriters like him today. :(

If David Cook sings any love song and does it even moderately well, the women in the audience will go nuts! lol

I think his fan base is growing in droves. :)

One of the songs in Jesus Christ, Superstar is called “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” The words, sung by Mary Magdelene, go “He’s a man, he’s just a man, and I’ve had so many men before.” Stating that there is nothing different or unique about Jesus, and implying that she slept with him, as she’s “had so many men before.”

Talk about taking something out of context -- the whole point of the song is that she trying to convince herself that he's "just a man", but she is unable to do so. She knows there's something very different and special about him, and she finds herself unable to relate to him on the terms she would normally use.

Top Ten Reasons Carly Smithson Was Voted Off American Idol

http://www.realitytvmagazine.com/blog/2008/04/24/top-ten-reasons-carly-smithson-was-voted-off-american-idol/

While a couple of weeks ago, everyone was baffled over why Michael Johns got eliminated from American Idol, there are several reasons circulating as to why Carly Smithson became the second shocking elimination of the season. Without further ado, here are Reality TV Magazine’s top ten reasons as to why Carly Smithson got the boot.

1. Kiss of Death – As Simon Cowell pointed out, a compliment from him can often be the kiss of death on American Idol. It’s not the first time a contestant has been sent packing after winning the praises of Mr. Cowell.

2. Cursed Tshirt – If receiving a compliment from Simon Cowell is the kiss of death, then what is prancing around on stage with a tshirt that says “Simon Loves Me.” Carly is lucky that she wasn’t struck dead by lightning right then and there.

3. Too Many Tattoos - While on some reality TV shows having a lot of tattoos is a good thing, it might not go over well with all of American Idol’s conservative viewer demographic.

4. Not From Around Here – While America might be the great melting pot, that doesn’t mean that all American Idol viewers are ready to see an Irish girl win American Idol. Michael Johns was the first shocking elimination of the season, and he was Australian. Could there be a trend?

5. Sang About Jesus - As evidenced by Idol Gives Back, anytime a song with any religious references is sung, then it is likely to offend at least some people. Could Andrew Lloyd Webber convincing Carly to switch her song have been an evil plot to get her eliminated?

6. Popularity Contest – Even though Jason Castro and Brooke White had worse performances, Brooke is very likable and Jason is charming. In the end, popularity means more than vocal ability.

7. Vote For The Worst – Brooke White has the support of Vote For The Worst, and their legion of followers could have helped give her enough votes to push her past both Syesha and Carly.

8. Failed Record Deal – While all the contestants might claim that previous experience doesn’t matter, American Idol viewers might not hold the same opinion. The fact that it was well-publicized in the news that Carly had a previous failed record deal might have cost her fans and votes.

9. Annoying Smile – While a nice smile or two can often help a performer connect to an audience, there can be too much of a good thing. Carly’s eyes-closed, wide-open-mouth smiles could have irritated some viewers.

10. Fans Thought She Was Safe – With some contestants having horrible nights, and Carly winning the praises of the judges, some of her fans might have assumed she was safe and not voted. This excuse seems to have been used in every other shocking elimination, so why not for Carly?

I’m surprised yet thrilled that my two favs, Brooke and Jason, weren’t in the bottom two. I really thought one of them would be going home this week. David C. has the best talent, but Brooke and Jason have an inner glow that made them special to me.

Let’s get it down to Archuleta and Cook and get it over with.

I agree, it's going to be a three week DRAG waiting for Brooke, Syesha and dreadlock to go.

All of DC’s competition has been voted off. None of the remaining four are in his category or style. That means he now has the largest base of voters.

Also, IMO, he’s the only one of the five who has It. Archie has more pure singing talent, but he really doesn’t have It. Syesha thinks she has It, but that just makes her more annoying because she doesn’t. Brooke can be dramatic on stage, but there’s something missing. Castro is just unusual, but he doesn’t have It. Plus, his voice isn’t nearly good enough.

So, I think David Cook will be this year’s winner.

Now, take that and four dollars and buy a Petite Cappuccino at your local coffee house. OK, maybe five bux.

What you say makes sense. Also, where do Carly’s votes go? I think they go to David Cook, which probably just doubled his fan base. We should know next week, by whether Archuleta takes the top spot at Dial Idol again, of if Cook keeps it.
