"...Last week's performance show, featuring the songs of Mariah Carey, one of the most successful pop singers in history, was the lowest-rated Tuesday "Idol" in five years among TV's most important demographic, adults ages 18 to 49. The subsequent results show, in which country warbler Kristy Lee Cook got the hook, delivered "Idol's" worst Wednesday numbers among adults ages 18 to 34 since its first season back in summer 2002.

Producers also saw depressed ratings for their "Idol Gives Back" charity extravaganza, which this year aired as a stand-alone show with no competition-related material.(snip)"

Ominous signs for 'American Idol'

I blame the stupid telethon. As I said before, I watch the show to escape my crappy life, not to be reminded that people have much crappier lives.

Mr. Bim scares me. I think it’s his weird human-like hands and suspenders attached to no pants.

lol

Funny thing is that my sister got it for Christmas one year. She must have been about a year old and she was scared to death of it and would scream and cry when she saw it. I don't think she really played with it until she was about 4 or 5. She was that afraid of it. But, once she got past being afraid of it, she played with it all the time. The one we had had a jingle bell on each of the suspenders.

I recently saw one advertised in a retro catalogue and told her about it and she said she would like to get one for her kids!

Wow I didn't think the reply page was going to ever load. Hope that doesn't mean tonight is going to be slow.

Superstar mentor

Lloyd Webber isn’t an “Idol”-worshipper, he’ll have you know.

“I’m a new boy on this one — I saw it this week for the first time. I think that’s rather good, you know, because I’m not influenced by what’s happened. I think the ‘Idol’ people were quite taken aback, actually, by what I do, versus some of the other mentors. I hope I’ve managed to change a couple of their performances, because a couple of them were dire.”

It should be noted that the last word comes out an appalled and upper-crusty “diaaaahhhh.”

“One of them,” he says, “actually ended up being really excellent.”

He won’t be coaxed into telling exactly who that singer is.

“No, I won’t, but it should be pretty obvious.”

(We’re calling it here: He’s referring to this season’s apparent Chosen One, 17-year-old David Archuleta, who is solidly in his comfort zone when it comes to delivering a big-voiced, emotional show tune ballad.)

“My only feeling about ‘Idol’ when I saw it was that all the judges thought they were going for the presidential campaign,” Lloyd Webber says. “I wanted to make them all laugh a little bit. The first thing I did was ask them the meaning of ... ‘Las Vegas,’ and none of them was able to answer. Well, the meaning is ‘the meadows.’ So I asked them had they seen any sheep here. And that made them smile a bit. And I said, ‘Well, I’ve seen a few people fleeced.’ ”

Ba-dum-bum. He’s here all weekend, ladies and gentlemen.

“Carly — she’s the Irish one, isn’t she? — Carly was going to do ‘All I Ask of You’ (from “Phantom”), and I felt a bit of a turncoat in this theater of all places, saying, ‘This is wildly unsuited for you, darling. I said to her, ‘It’s crazy, you’ve got to do a rock-and-roll song. Better to do “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I think she’ll rock the place out with it,” he chuckles. “We’ll see how much they take of what I said — or not. I’ll probably be cut to shreds (in editing).”

LMAO! That is so funny!

A couple of years ago, my cousin's little boy was really into Spiderman. I think he was about 3 at the time. For Christmas, my mom bought him this Spiderman doll that was pretty big. He opened it, put it down, and slowly backed away. He couldn't say anything except, "Spiderman bad!" They had to put it in the closet or he wouldn't go to sleep. My mom felt horrible! But it makes for a funny story.

Apparently, the source for that is here:

http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/04/idol-lloyd-webb.html?xid=rss-feed-americanidol-20080422-What+should+the+Idols+sing+for+Andrew+Lloyd+Webber+night%3F

It’s not a leak; it’s a bunch of suggestions of what those two think the contestants should sing. But I could be wrong.

My mom felt horrible! But it makes for a funny story.

I think it was my grandparents that bought it for my sister. They felt bad, too. Another year they bought her some little necklace and it was wrapped in one of those boxes with the cotten batting. When she opened it the necklace had slid under the cotton, but she was all excited saying look, look, she got cotton. And she really was more thrilled with the cotton than the necklace!

Sort of like cats. You can spend good money on toys and they won't play with them. They'd rather play with the paper bag the toy came home in.

By the way, did you or anyone watch Can You Duet? I thought both episodes were really good and some of the people are just awesome.

Can You Duet
Friday Nights at 8/7c

The producers of American Idol are teaming up with CMT to find the next great country music duo in the most original singing competition ever, Can You Duet.

Each contestant will compete as part of a duo, and viewers will witness first hand all the on and off-stage drama in creating a dynamic musical duo. In addition to critiquing each performance and deciding who will advance to the next round, the judges will serve as mentors to guide, groom and develop the duets along the way.

Makes sense now. AI doesn’t want country singers messing up their ‘pop’ show.

This is the only duet ‘from the show’ that I could find at you tube.

According to this article the one who impressed him was Brooke http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/04/how_many_american_idol_contest.html

“According to the L.A. Times, the Lord himself has tagged the genially acoustic Brooke White as the one who impressed him the most...”

Looking back over his day with the contestants, Lloyd Webber was cautiously hopeful that his works would survive their encounter with American reality television and enthused about the singers the show has fielded. Not having seen the show on air this season, he said after working with the group, “The six kids were really in their own ways all very talented. I think that in their own way they're a pretty diverse bunch, and in their own way they've all got something.”

Although Lloyd Webber was barred “under pain of death” from revealing the song choices, he was allowed to speak of being struck by one moment in particular. “The girl who I was really quite impressed with was Brooke. She was really -- I got something out of her. I mean, whether or not, you know, that is there at the end, I really couldn't tell you.

"The one thing is, working with me, one on one, where I'm on the other side -- I'm sort of actually, in her case, holding her hand to get the performance out of her. It's very different than sitting in a great big television studio with a big audience and you've got a camera in front of you. So, one will have to see.”

snip

Giving a little more away about what is in store on Andrew Lloyd Webber week, he revealed that the group number was “something I suggested,” and went on to say, “It's a bit of an odd choice perhaps. I think it will work. We'll see.” When badgered for more information, he would reveal only that, although his shows are rife with rousing group numbers, this song in fact was not originally sung by a group.

Continuing on the experience of watching the cast perform his work, Lloyd Webber said, “I hear my songs all over the place, all over the world. You hear versions of them where they work, but they're not necessarily what I would do if I were there and were able to have input to the artist, which is why it is quite interesting to have a bunch of kids singing my own music. Very strange choices some of them made as well.” He laughs. “But I'm not allowed to tell you about it.

You HAVE to take credit for it! At first when I read these threads, I thought you were just making a comment in French because in French it means something like “my little sweetie,” which also works for Archuleta! Then I saw your monchichi toy and I had to laugh.

FR. The world’s show prep.
