The gnats are planning to sign with RCA as soon as the season is over.

That's why I started calling her Ramekin, because I can spell it.

Ooooo, Miss Didi. That’s a great gnats cartoon. I love it. That’s them. Practicing in the nether reaches of Jason’s locks, and already planning their tour. :)

Now I can’t stop worrying if I’m spelling her name right

Ah, but misspelled names (deliberately or otherwise) are a hallmark of this thread. :)

Every time I glanced Ramiele, it always looked like Ramcicle and that seems like a really unflattering nickname for anyone.

Wow! Last week Simon praised Lee Greenwood and God Bless the USA. This week Dolly sings about Jesus. What’s going on in Hollywood?

I don't know but I like it :)

What other mainstream TV show could we see this?

It's the country music influence. Seriously. Expressions of faith are a large part of the country music repertoire.

Ramiken has now proven why she is too immature to be an “American Idol” GOod Lord, kid, get a grip!

Amen. I thought they'd have to carry her away on a stretcher.

he's been doing the dreaded tour of Indonesia and the Phillippines.

That doesn't sound too good. Hope he doesn't bump into Camile Velasco, lol

Dolly’s version of Smokey Mountain Memories also talks about Jesus!

That's right. I forgot about that.

Brooke is going to have a nervous breakdown before this is over....

LOL! If someone is going to be hospitalized for high blood pressure, I would think it'd be Brooke :)

Here’s some other stuff (this is some of the more interesting less contestant/specific performance related stuff) :-) We’ve got a group of 30 or so playing a game with Idol (on 4 1/2 continents) and so I wrote a ton up about it to send to some of our faraway folks, so this is from that.

We all felt like it was hard to recall more than one or two other weeks in all the past seasons, when everyone had such good performances. Part of it may be they all made better song choices this week, part of it may have been helpful counsel from Dolly, but we were surprised. We expected several to have a harder time with more country flavored songs, and so we were very pleasantly surprised, and felt blessed to have seen a show when they all did quite well!

Obviously some were a little shakier during the Live Show, as we saw when watching it on TV, but overall, we had a very hard time figuring out who any of us would put in our B3 for the game. We all agreed just after the DR show, that Ramiele was the weakest, but even for her, it was not as bad as many other times, and bordered more on being forgettable than absolutely horrible.

It was very hard to hear much of the clips with Dolly Parton. The cheering/clapping/etc. plus the acoustics of the room definitely made it hard to hear

The acoustics of the room, and again, all of the cheering and reacting from those who could hear, made it nearly impossible to hear about 85-90% of what the faux judges said, and I’ve heard that’s true, even with the real judges.

Commercial breaks are interesting, as Ryan’s often down greeting people, sometimes the Idol who just sang is greeting people also. You can see that being a time when Ryan’s handler gets frazzled because he just goes wandering off! Some people try to get autographs and one younger girl seemed to get them from nearly everyone!

During the ‘interview’ times (like with David Cook and Jason C this week over on the stools) they did other things...like had a little girl (very little...must have been a guest of a contestant or judge) on the stool as a ‘sit in’ for David Cook (though he was standing behind her) and you could tell she was thrilled.

Nigel Lithgoe (the producer and also the British judge on So You Think You Can Dance) was in the audience near us and went on stage and had a pow-wow with the contestants and Ryan around the piano afterwards...interesting just to watch them all interact like that!

Stage set-up is interesting with the perches up high where they sometimes walk down singing from. Seeing Sayesha struggle, even barefoot, and not trying to sing at the same time, and even watching one of the band guys go down a bit gingerly at one point, I can’t imagine any of them voluntarily choosing to sing beginning up there and trying to navigate the stairs while trying to not lose focus while singing. The “red room” they sometimes are in (though weren’t this week) is definitely off stage far beyond view of the audience, not nearly as close as it’s made to appear (to the point we weren’t quite sure WHERE it really is)

They use the time during the pre-song clips (like the Dolly ones this week, the baby photo/interview ones last week, etc.) to get the performer to their spot for singing, and get any instruments out to them, and set up mic stands, etc. That also adds to making it harder to focus (or hear) the clips that we see on TV. It’s amazing how quickly they do things like get the piano out from behind the screen and have it set up for the next performance.

It was definitely an ambitious week to go down to an hour show. It seems like at 8 Idols left that would have made more sense...since with just 3 less we had a full 2 hour show! They were RACING through things during the DR. The ‘Simon’ judge hardly ever managed to say anything, and by Sayesha and MJ, the other two were hardly getting to talk either. Ryan was talking at turbo pace, trying to cram words into as few seconds as possible. Perhaps the most amusing thing is how easily he does it...not that it’s intelligible to most people, but...HE can talk at almost any necessary pace it seems! It was amazing to see that it didn’t come across quite as rushed on TV, but it was definitely a crammed full hour!

The judges have monitors by them so they can see ON SCREEN what you’re seeing on TV. Often you note Simon looking at that when they perform (which is typically when he gets criticized for ‘looking down’) BUT they also have vocal monitors and speakers behind them to compensate for the surprisingly bad acoustics of the room. They essentially have a u-shaped surround system behind them, which is either different based on the new set-up this season, or else Simon is taking advantage of it. I’d actually commented to the boys that I noticed he’s always looking more towards the audience and leaning back more this year. Now I completely understand why. The sound in the room is really difficult to hear nuances of vocals in, especially when you have most everyone clapping or cheering or squealing at many points. Simon, in leaning back, is actually probably hearing the truest sound to what we hear when we watch the show on TV, as he’s opting to hear it with more of the other sound drowned out as he’s hearing it in the monitors. So while he gets flack for it often in press and reviews, and even I thought he was being a little rude this season when you see him lean back (even sometimes when the contestants are talking to the judges) I honestly believe now it’s because otherwise it is virtually impossible to hear anything well in that room!
