How’s your search going?

Thanks for asking. So far, not too good.

It's like we're in some liberal vortex

Yikes! You have my sincere sympathy. :(

Camile Velasco?

Yes! That's the one. Last Jonny and I saw of her, she was warbling none to sweetly on some far east variety show of some kind.

While he didn’t put up many top tier performances he was a really likable guy.

I agree and am sorry to see him go so soon.

That crowd was apparently starved for entertainment

Well, at least Camile can claim to have become a superstar somewhere on the planet. Personally, I'm glad it's on the far side. :)

The Idol telethon is more about ratings anyway.

And about Leftist self-aggrandisement. I honestly believe there is no such thing as white guilt on the Left. I think these things are all about puffing up one's chest and showing the world what good folks we are. Pure hedonistic self-aggrandisement and self-congratulations mixed with a healthy dose of sanctimony. Gag!

I don’t know about a lib-card but she is almost certainly Mormon as that is the primary religion of Mesa. Big LDS Temple there. Odds are that she’s fairly conservative.

Wow, didn’t care for this bottom 3 at all. They deserved better.

Sorry to see Chikezie go.

I was always taught you're supposed to do that -- high notes are more penetrating than low notes, so you either back off the volume or pull the mike away. Nothing "dramatic" about it, it's just to keep the high notes from being overpowering.

Yes, but -- go back and look at the recording if you still have it. You'll see other singers back off the mike a little, say five or six inches, so they don't blast the mike. The way he's backing it off, he'd have to be Pavarotti! (I watched an Idol-like show for young opera singers lately, and their mikes [hanging mikes] were about two feet away!) Also, he's not backing off the mike as the note builds -- he's giving just an instant of the note and then holding it about a foot away, so you don't hear the whole note. Just not cricket, IMHO. (Though effective, apparently, since only loons like myself are paying attention to it! LOL!)

She is LDS, as is Monchichi. Musical training for youts is promoted in that culture. And while the culture is overwhelmingly conservative, it, like many other faiths, has a pretty wild liberal wing. Small, but loopy.

In all fairness, with all the other crap that the contestants go through during the week, coming up with an original arrangement every week is not a real option. You have to pick your song and add a twist or two.

Thank you for pointing this out. It was mentioned orignally by Seacrest when David did the song the other night. It's just unrealistic to think you can, in the two or three days time, make up a completely original twist on a song.

However, David, if he doesn't know how to write originals better learn quick because it's going to be demanded of him, or he'll have to end up buying other writer's material when he makes a CD.

Furthermore, it doesn't matter if did someone elses version, he knocked it out of the park. The kid can sing!

Thanks :)

I shouldn't complain though. This little brush with liberalism doesn't compare with what you have to endure in California every day :-/

I finally got the judges figured out.

The more of the singing is unintelligible, the more the judges praise the singer.

Oh...there’s like all these buttons on a big desk.

I immediately thought of this...

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

No mention of David Cook's exact copy of Chris Cornell's arangement of Billie Jean, just praise from the judges. Getting all the credit

I actually heard Ryan tell David that he heard from Chris Cornell and that he gave David props for his song and thought it was done really well. Did you miss that?

H_F: Were you the poster last season who found the blog written by the vocal coach that critiqued the AI contestants each week? If so, and you still have the site, could you post a link? I thought that was VERY informative and made me really listen to the performances. (By the way, your comments are always right on, IMO).
