Can you imagine how difficult it was for those poor men to have lower themselves to beg for food? Americans of that era were different than those of today... the state governments had welfare programs running but many folks were too proud to take handouts. Men who could not find work often asked if they could volunteer to do something, anything, rather than be idle, even if the pay was nothing.

The people we have today seem like they'd just as soon take money from someone else who earned it, and then complain that they are victims. Of all the liberal junk that's going on, that's the thing that bothers my son the most - welfare dependency. He's not real happy about political correctness either, but welfare drives him crazy.

OK off my soapbox now, LOL.

I do understand the changes in times.

At Wellton, in the beginning, a man would walk from Mexico, 40 miles in the extreme heat, see me shoveling out the pens and take the fork/shovel from my hands and ask for food.

By 1976/77 there was cleaner, younger crowd coming across and they would not work, but would ORDER you to get them food........the beginning of the crowds we see marching down the street in protest today.

A friend had married a man who was a Hobo, LOL, a Bill, a good man, with out any desire to get ahead.

He took a job on a navy base, as a janitor and stuck with it until he retired at 63, had one heart attack and died on his 65th birthday.

All he asked out of life, was a cigarette, if I brought him one and 3 meals a day.

I have often thought that maybe he was smarter than me.
