The Brady Punch (Don Shula Gives Patriots Asterisk)
Chicago Tribune ^ | 1-13-08 | Rick Morrissey

Don Shula, the coach of that Miami team, wants an asterisk put in the NFL record book if the Pats do go undefeated.

"The Spygate thing has diminished what they've accomplished," he said earlier this season. "You would hate to have that attached to your accomplishments. They've got it."

They cheated. They got caught. They were fined. You love your pats. Asterisk is the least that should be done.

One of the most ridiculous cry-baby rants in sports history has surrounded this whole thing. Jets the prior year were “caught” doing what the Pats also did.

The real issues here is envy and bitterness.

There was and is NO WAY to use in real time the view of signals that ALL teams try and decipher and get an idea about. And since this even happened on game one it makes it clear that the rest of the season was without this supposed advantage...how then, did they win the rest of the year?

Ridiculous and childish.

You are correct, there is a sour grapes element to it; great team but a perfect season to me, even if they go all the way, doesn’t mean best team ever! They’ve been the best in recent years for this era. I won’t deny them with an asterisk. A champion is just that...but are we going to hear next year, my gosh, one for the thumb!

“Cheated”. Videotaped from the wrong area. What a joke.

They did cheat but it just sounds like sour grapes from Shula.

...if the Pats do go undefeated.

Don't worry, Don. The G-Men will take care of the cheaters in the Super Bowl.

They paid the fine after they were caught, cheating. Check your facts every now and then.

Two more games to go. I don’t think they are going to make it. I think either San Diego or Green Bay will defeat them.

I believe that 15 minutes of videoing, in the first season that it was illegal to do it, gave them no advantage for which to put an asterisk next to their record.

But you do agree that they had an elaborate cheating scheme in place, and did so without shame.

That's enough for me. It's a trust thing.

Nice morals. Sipping champaign when your record isn’t broken is the same as cheating to break the record. How do you come down on on Bobby Bonds using steroids? The end justifies the means? UFB. The facts are facts: the Patriots are cheaters.

And the Dolphins not only played fewer games then the Pats, they played the easiest schedule of ANY Superbowl winner. The combined winning percentage was barely above .300.

So, what’s going to happen in the Superbowl? I assume the Pats will get there, but I don’t believe they’ll have any of the same kind of tape on the Packers or Giants. Maybe either team will cream them.

The combined winning percentage was barely above .300.

.375, to be precise. And that was the regular season. In the playoffs they beat three very good teams -- Cleveland (10 - 4), Pittsburgh (11 - 3), and Washington (11 - 3).

They were a ball control team -- wear out the opposition with their running game. ....especially the power game (Csonka). And of course they had a very tough defense.

Brady throws more passes in one game than Griese threw in five. Totally different game.

I’m not a Pats fan but I think Shula is full of ****.

The Pats won more games during the regular season than the Dolphins did decades ago and they’ve already matched the Dolphins total wins for the entire year. Personally I was hoping for the Dolphins to go 0-16 while the Pats went 16-0 this year. Oh the irony.

I sat and watched the Pats play the Jaguars and an “anti-Pats” player was convinced the refs were blind or in cahoots with a league that wants the Pats to go undefeated. I thought I was listening to a Democrat whine about the 2000 election.

Pats hav

The Patriots taping scandal is tantamount to Watergate.

Why risk EVERYTHING for unneeded, unnecessary actions.
Nobody was going to beat Nixon and this Patriot bunch is definitely the ‘class’ of the NFL, at least this season.

I've heard it already.

"What Belichick did wasn't cheating!... Okay, so it was cheating but come on, everyone cheats!"

They're still a fine team. It just woulda been better that their season had no asterisk.

RISK??? What did they "risk"? They did what they did in the clear open sky. They did not try to hide because I tell you this. There are hunderds of vantage points to have secretly done what they did in the open. The idea that this was cheating is so laughable and all of it is just sour grapes.

There was NO WAY to exploit the signals in real time. None. Period. Even for later games where the signals CHANGE they would not have been served.
