Aren’t they beautiful birds? I was so excited to see it; we just mostly have the more common birds around here. The state bird of Missouri is the bluebird, and I’ve never seen one. The bluejays have started coming back after they were so decimated by the West Nile Virus, so that’s good.

I think that's the first time I'd ever seen one. We have a big woodsy area at the back of our lot, and we've seen all kinds of birds back there. Our kitchen table sits in a bump out at the back of the house, and just from there, it's fun to see the different birds. I usually see a LOT of cardinals in the winter; they stand out against the snow. I didn't see many this year, but because we've had the kitchen in disarray, we haven't sat at the table much, so I hadn't been looking out there.

There's a swampy area about a mile away, and I see red-winged blackbirds there from time to time, and a goose family lives there, too. I've seen Mama and Papa grazing in the grass on the swamp side of the road, this Spring, and sometimes they'll cross over to the other side, which is also woodsy. In the past, I've seen them with their goslings pecking in the grass on the swamp side.
