I’m going out for another look. Have to rest against the carport to steady the binoculars.

I don’t know . . . this time . . . I didn’t see the sharp angled stuff nor the seeming lower part. And, it seems to have moved toward between the 1:00 and 2:00 positioins relative to the moon.

Before, it seemed much closer relative to the moon. Now, I’m not sure.

Surprised if you see the same thing from Southern CA if my first impression of it being lower in the atmosphere was remotely correct.

What do I know.

This ATS thread is convinced it’s Mars:

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread322703/pg1

But am a bit confused as to the relative position thing.

When we first saw it around 6:30 with the “naked eye” (I wear glasses) it was at about the four o’clock position. At around 7:00 pm it had moved to the 2:00 o’clock position and had moved farther away from the moon.

Examining it for about fifteen or twenty minutes through 20 power binoculars it appears to be round and bright white. The full moon usually blots out all but the brightest stars here in the high desert so I’m guessing it is in fact one of the planets -— my guess is Mercury.

Griffith Observatory is open until 10:00 pm PST. Maybe someone there will answer the phone if you call them.

The Griffith Observatory Sky Report
Anthony Cook
Astronomical Observer

http://www.griffithobs.org/skyreport.html

This is the Griffith Observatory Sky Report for the week ending Wednesday, December 26. Here is what’s happening in the skies of Southern California:

Mars, in Gemini the Twins, is now in prime position to observe from the early evening, when it is low in the east northeast, until dawn, when it has moved to the west-northwest. The planet is directly opposite the sun (at opposition) on Christmas eve, and is highest, only seven degrees from the zenith (the overhead point) at midnight. The brilliant rust-orange planet now slightly outshines the brightest star, Sirius, in Canis Major the Big Dog.

The winter solstice–the start of winter in the northern hemisphere–occurs at 10:08 p.m., P.S.T. on Friday night, December 21. The winter solstice is also the shortest day, only nine hours and 53 minutes long in Los Angeles.

Saturn in Leo the Lion, rises in the east at about 10 p.m. It is best seen when it transits 66 degrees high in the south at 4:30 a.m. It’s rings, visible in a telescope capable of at least 50 power, are now inclined seven degrees from edge-on.

The brightest planet, Venus, rises at about 3:45 a.m. and appears about 25 degrees high in the southeast during the dawn.

The moon starts this week in a waxing gibbous phase and reaches full on Sunday evening, then shows a waning gibbous phase for the remainder of the week. Note that full moon happens when the moon is in opposition, as is Mars, and the two will rise together in the east-northeast (just as the sun sets in the west-southwest) on Sunday evening. The pair will be separated by less than the moon’s diameter (half a degree) until about 6:30 p.m.

The moon will pass in front of M44 (the “Beehive Cluster”) in Cancer the Crab, starting at about 4:30 a.m. on the morning of Wednesday, December 26. Dawn will put and end to our view of this occultation–which requires a telescope to observe–at shortly after 6 a.m.

The International Space Station will make an appearance over Los Angeles on Thursday night, December 20. The Space Station, which appears as a brilliant moving star, moves above the northwest horizon at 6:22 p.m., and reaches an apparent altitude of 41 degrees above the northwest horizon at 6:24 p.m. just as it vanishes into the Earth’s shadow. On the next night, Friday the 21st, the ISS will make two evening appearances, first passing 20 degrees above the northeast horizon at 5:10 p.m., then 22 degrees above the southwest horizon one orbit later, at 6:45 p.m. The expected Space Shuttle launch, mentioned last week, has been indefinitely delayed while engineers strive to solve a critical sensor problem.

Free public sky viewing, day and night, is available through Griffith Observatory’s telescopes six nights a week, Tuesday through Sunday. The next public star party, held by members of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and the Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers, will be held on the Observatory’s front lawn on Saturday, December 22. For Observatory information, please visit our website, www.griffithobservatory.org, or call (213) 473-0800.

The Sky Report is updated every Wednesday, and can be heard as a recorded phone message by calling (213) 473-0880. From Griffith Observatory, I’m Tony Cook, and I can be reached at tcook@earthlink.net

LOOK AT THE FULL MOON . . .

I saw that last night also, took two digitals don’t know how they look, will check out later, first photo was hand held, second I rested the camera on the gas grill.

Mrs. LVD got my attention, she said the moon is shining so bright that the laundry room is lit up. I stepped into the room and looked at the moon, saw what I thought was a star at the 4 o’clock position, went out side to confirm the light was not a reflection of the glass, saw the object went to get the camera took the photos, went back in to get the 16 x 60 binoculars, again looked but just briefly. Awful bright for a star, especially with a full moon, interesting! Anyone confirm what it was??

Mars. Confirmed by an observatory.

Ben Lurkin did yeoman’s work in verifying after wisely asserting that was likely what it was.

Mars was at opposition Dec 19.

Viewing conditions should be extremely good for the next 3 weeks or so.

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O holy night, O night divine!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O’er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

http://www.boingboing.net/2006/06/21/interview-with-ufo-h.html

Gary McKinnon: A NASA photographic expert said that there was a Building 8 at Johnson Space Center where they regularly airbrushed out images of UFOs from the high-resolution satellite imaging. I logged on to NASA and was able to access this department. They had huge, high-resolution images stored in their picture files. They had filtered and unfiltered, or processed and unprocessed, files.

My dialup 56K connection was very slow trying to download one of these picture files. As this was happening, I had remote control of their desktop, and by adjusting it to 4-bit color and low screen resolution, I was able to briefly see one of these pictures. It was a silvery, cigar-shaped object with geodesic spheres on either side.

[of course! geodesic spheres! Two of them! With a cigar-shaped object between ‘em! NASA porn! Cool!]
