Well sadly, I have to work tomorrow otherwise I would probably be really uncoordinated right now. ;)

A Pabst-induced headache?!

It isn’t even new Years day yet!

I love Pabst Blue Ribbon. It’s my new beer. I have a 12-pack of bottles in my fridge.

OK, actually there’s only 9 of ‘em left.

I’m not into the fancy micro-brews so Miller High Life or Pabst is good enough for me.

Hey, I just thought of something else.

I’ve read some of your earlier posts regarding a play-off system for college football.

I found a web site that pretty much explains why that’ll never happen.

Check this out: http://www.footballbowlassociation.com

Okay, so we've had our appetizer and complimentary bread sticks, now it's time for the main course as the games get more frequent and the teams get a little better. Today's games...
It's the Armed Forces Bowl between Cal and The Air Force Academy (12:30 pm, ESPN Regular). Here could be another game where offense is king. Many of you have seen a lot of the Golden Bears, but the option is the little black dress of offenses: still hot and never goes out of style. Not that, um, I would know...about....trying on dresses...let's move on, shall we?
It's Georgia Tech and Fresno State in the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl (2pm, ESPN2). Taking place in Boise, Idaho (hey, that's where I live!), it's another golden opportunity for America to see "the Blue" in all it's glory. And who wouldn't want to go to a bowl game where the high temp here in the City of Trees will be 32 degrees?
South Florida gets to take on Oregon in the Sun Bowl (2pm, See-BS). We knew what happened to the Ducks, but what happened to USF? These were teams that were ranked #2 at some point this year and now they get to go to El Paso.
For our old pal Bat_Chemist, what's left of Florida State will take on Kentucky in the Music City Bowl (4pm, ESPN. I know this will probably be the football equivalent of waterboarding for Seminole fans, but I suppose it had to be mentioned. Sorry guys.
Indiana takes on Oklahoma State in the Insight Bowl (5:30 pm, NFL Network). This NFL Network crap again. They're really screwing up my football watching universe
And for Palmetto, the Clemson Tigers play Tigers of an Auburn persuasion in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl (7:30 pm, ESPN) Something though has been bugging me: is Chick-fil-A any good? I mean, I love chicken, but I've been exposed mainly to KFC, Popeye's and El Pollo Loco. Well, anyway, enjoy the games and now I'll go to bed.

No PBR...but 30 beers and a large bottle of gin between 3 people.

It didn’t help that the guy I shared a hotel room with snored so bad I couldn’t sleep even in that state.

I love the “what’s left of Florida State” part.

I’m having a bowl party, I’m about to go fire up the grill and smoke some ribs. You coming?

For some reason this one goes all over me. Most of the corporate sponsors are charitable enough to leave the original name of the bowl in the title. For example the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

But the bowl "formerly known as the Peach Bowl" is now the Chick-Fil-A bowl. I remember the last time for the Peach Bowl the announcers joking about how they'd be back for the Chick-Fil-A bowl, but wearing peach-colored ties.

BTW, their food isn't any better than their bowl sponsorship. If you have access to a Popeye's you're getting the best fast chicken in the world. KFC is edible. Wouldn't know about El Pollo Loco. Chick-Fil-A is substandard, and they ruined a perfectly good bowl game to boot.

Just my opinion, of course...

Here’s an interesting tidbit I picked up this morning that might explain some of the reluctance on the part of college presidents for a college playoff system.

Most of the speculation here has been on using the current line up of bowls to host the playoffs and just how lucrative this would be for the teams involved. According to this article, bowls aren’t that lucrative and usually the participating teams lose money. Now why would a college president support a playoff, when each game his team participates in loses money. IOW, the higher up the ladder you go, the more games you’ve played, and the more money you’ve lost.

Oh, I know, some will say but that doesn’t include the revenue from TV which would be huge for a playoff. I’m not convinced that is the case for two reasons.

First, the TV revenue would not be constant for each game. The earlier ladder games would not be as financial lucretive as the final four.

Second, the TV revenue would be dependent upon how a playoff were structured. If it were an NCAA playoff, meaning it was sponsored by the NCAA and that is what most people are demanding, then the NCAA would decide how to split the money. Consequently, the revenue to each team would be ‘taxed’ by the NCAA. The last time the NCAA had the TV contract, the NCAA tax was 50%. So much for TV revenue.

But, then, there are those who say the basketball play offs make money so would football. Well, basketball ain’t football. The costs associated with moving a football team around along with the band, etc., simply aren’t comparable. Also, there would be a bunch more travel involved in the football playoffs.

Once again, I’m not deadset against a playoff. I thnk it would be great fun. I’m only posting this because I’ve not seen anything other than this that addresses the financial aspects.

Anyway, something to think about.

Go OU.

For you guys who can’t follow the link below, I’ve cut the relevent portion of the article:

“It’s a well-kept secret that amid all the festivity, bowl games rarely pay for cost of the schools attending them. According to a recent Orange County Register article, Florida and Ohio State each finished more than $600,000 in the red last year from travel expenses to the national title game. The PetroSun Independence Bowl’s $1.1 million payout to each school might sound immense, but with the average program expenditure for a non-BCS bowl game sitting at $937,834, Alabama and Colorado will be fortunate to break even on games.”

Chick-fil-A any good?

Yes, they put out a nice chicken sandwich (grab a pack or two of mayo to squirt on) and some excellent salads.

The most interesting thing about Chick-fil-a, for those who aren't familiar with the chain: it's privately owned so that they can close on Sunday. The owner is a devout Baptist, and he felt that shareholder pressure would require him to open on Sunday if he went public, so he passed up the chance to cash out for millions.

If you have access to a Popeye's you're getting the best fast chicken in the world.

When I first moved to Idaho, I was driving to a doctor's appointment when I noticed a Popeye's. That amazed me, how the hell did a Popeye's end up here in Idaho? But, I have to agree, Popeye's is flat-out incredible.

That's correct, and it's mainly due to travel costs, especially if you're a team like Georgia Tech for example playing here for the Humanitarian Bowl. That's why I would have to think a playoff system would need to factor in something like the pod system in the NCAA basketball tournament--which is designed to keep every team as close to home as possible.

Yeah, I think I had heard that about the chain, but I didn’t know that was the reason why.

What’s going on with Kentucky?

I didn’t expect the score to be 14-14 at this point in the game.

I’m sitting in a work cubicle now so I can’t see the game.

Is Florida State playing like they’re on fire - or does Kentucky look bad?

Anyone?

I agree with you above having left the name “Peach Bowl” alone.

But I disagree with you on Chick-fil-a sandwiches. They’re damned good.

There’s not many Popeyes in my area. The few ones we have are located in really bad parts of town.

I used to prefer Church's, but since they have gone Muslim, I think I'll give them a pass.

I just now switched over to that game after watching the Humanitarian Bowl. I’m a little surprised at this one myself.

How does Chick Fil A Peach Bowl sound? I wish the corporations would just leave the names alone. Like the Sugar Bowl is still the Sugar Bowl. Who gives a darn about the sponsor?????

As for Popeyes vs. Chick-Fil-A, I’ll take the latter. The last time I was violently ill (almost four years ago), I had Popeyes for dinner. Can’t even consider having the stuff again. And I had always loved Popeyes. Hubby feels the same way. He was violently ill as well. (I went around 8 years without eating Pringles because of a similar experience.)

KFC makes us sick every time we eat it. Not violently ill, but upset tummy-like feeling. We go back because of the smell outside the restaurant is so enticing. We ALWAYS regret it.

Chick-Fil-A makes really good lemonade unlike the nasty imitation lemonade available at most fast food joints. They also have good party trays. I hate waffle fries! I can’t speak for CFA bowl sponsorships. How can a sponsor ruin a bowl?
