College Football Madness ( vanity )

Posted on 12/01/2007 8:42:42 PM PST by devere

#1 Missouri is losing decisively.

#2 West Virginia has lost.

Now who deserves to play #3 Ohio State in the national championship game?

LSU? USC? Georgia? Oklahoma? There seems to be no obvious answer.

“They schedule these games so the money stays in the state.”

That’s about the weakest excuse I could ever imagine to try to explain away Youngstown State, Kent State, and Akron in the same season. For a top program? I wonder if there has ever been anything like it.......outside of the SEC of course.

You can never achieve any sort of accurate match ups with the BCS. It's not possible in college ball.

They need to fuhget about it and go back to the old system with the understanding that it cannot be done.

BCS sucks.....

I would vote for Virginia Tech and LSU.

Ohio State is out because they played a worthless schedule and still lost a game. If a team wants to be considered for the championship game, that team needs to schedule championship opponents. The Big 10 was pathetic this year, and Ohio State didn't schedule any real games outside the conference.

Kansas is out because they played a non-conference schedule that was as weak as Ohio State's schedule. If they'd played and beaten Oklahoma, their situation would be different, but they didn't even play Oklahoma this year. They played one good team, and they lost.

Georgia is out because in spite of their recent wins, they still lost to South Carolina and lost badly to Tennessee. Their non-conference schedule wasn't bad, but they didn't play anyone extremely tough.

USC is out because their non-conference schedule wasn't impressive and they still lost two games within the conference.

LSU should be in because LSU has played most of the SEC and had to be taken to three overtimes in both of their losses. LSU hasn't had a great non-conference schedule either, but they beat a Virginia Tech team that turned out to be very good.

Virginia Tech should be in because avenging their one loss against Boston College makes them a little more like a one-loss team. Otherwise, their only loss is to a top-10 team.

It’s not an excuse. It is the reality. Take it up with the OSU athletic department.

It’s not for us to ‘take it up with the OSU athletic department’. It’s only for us to evaluate the merits of that scheduling, when a number of other schools competing with Ohio State for national honors wouldn’t think of such absurd scheduling.

I think what all this is going to boil down to is: We need a playoff.

Nope. A playoff would deprive us of the fun of having inconclusive discussions like this one.

I'm glad OSU is going to the national championship game, but we beat Michigan this year. THAT's all that matters.

I'm with you. All those sour grapes out there make for some mighty fine whine.

Whoever goes will beat Ohio State soundly... I think it should be LSU cause they lost their two games in OT and they won the SEC Championship. I wouldn’t complain if USC or Oklahoma made it, but don’t think Georgia should because I think you should have to win your division to have a shot at the National Championship. I’m just glad it’s not going to be Missouri or West Virginia because they could have lost to Ohio State and Ohio State would be middle of the pack in the SEC, Pac 10 and probably even the Big 12.

I don't know why they chose to play weak teams outside of their conference.

Are you really that ignorant?

According to the computers, the match-up should be LSU vs VA Tech. Because OSU has only one loss, the most likely match-up is OSU vs LSU. Because Georgia did not play, both LSU and VA Tech will pass Georgia in the computers.

LSU 1 2 2 2 avg 1.75
VAT 1 1 2 3 avg 1.75
OSU 2 3 3 4 avg 3.00

But OSU will likely be #1 in both USA Today (Coaches) and Harris interactive. Since the computers will have LSU and VA Tech tied (my best estimate, as I do not have the computer formulas available), and since the humans had VA Tech and LSU in a virtual dead heat, and since VA Tech had a more convincing win this week than LSU, you might think that VA Tech will end up ahead of LSU. It’s possible, but doubtful.

Reason: LSU demolished VA Tech in their meeting, and the SEC is regarded as a tougher conference than the ACC.

Now, if you go with the politically incorrect method of using scores in your rankings, then you would have Oklahoma vs Florida. Or, if you combined the two, Ohio State vs. LSU. Which is what it’s going to be. The BCS works, but this year a playoff would be more satisfying.

BCS prediction: it all depends on how well the Ohio State defense holds LSU. I would make Ohio State 5-4 favorites, or 2 point favorites, but I expect LSU to be 2.5 point favorites.

I'll say this though: even if you had a Plus One four-team playoff in place, we'll still be having major fistfights on who will become BCS #2 through #4 this year after Ohio State. What a mess this BCS voters will have to now sort out.

I am with you Ohio State does not deserve to go with the schedule they played.

The Bucks will be in the National championship game now. They needed either West Virginia or Mizzou to lose and as luck would have it, both of them lost.

It will be the Bucks against whomever is picked the new #2 today (Sunday).

Missouri was #1 headed into the week but they lost to Oklahoma who lost to Boise State in a Bowl Game last year. Boise State has only lost to Washington and Hawaii this year. Hawaii beat Boise State and just beat Washington. Hawaii is undefeated while any other team that would be paired with Ohio State would have 2 losses. A team shouldn’t go undefeated and not have a chance to play for the National Title. USC and Michigan both ducked Hawaii. Hawaii deserves to be in the BCS Championship Game, not just a BCS game. Hawaii also beat Arizona State in a Bowl Game last year. Hawaii also has a better QB than any other team and better wide receivers. They have a better offense than any other team out there and score the most points. Any way you look at it besides the corrupt angles that most people are using favoring one conference over another and trying to settle things off the field rather than on it, Hawaii deserves to be in the BCS Championship Game.
