I agree...We did this all the time when we were kids. When mom left...we turned our flashlights back on...and continued reading our comic books.

Not for nothing...but comic books...not assign schooled readings is how we became good readers.

I taught myself to read over the course of a “polio summer,” when little kids weren’t allowed outside to play.

I was cooped up in my room with a little blackboard that had the alphabet on it and I somehow just figured it out. Also taught myself how to tie my shoelaces during that time. LOL, it mirrors my pitiful life nowadays.

When I started kindergarten that fall at 4, I was the only kid who knew how to read, so the teacher used to leave me in charge of reading to the class when she had to go somewhere else. Yikes.
