It's time again for my quarterly "What Are You Reading Now?" thread!
It can be anything...a NY Times bestseller, a technical journal, a trashy pulp novel...in short, anything!
DO NOT answer by saying "I'm Reading This Thread". It stopped being funny a long time ago.
Here's what I'm reading. I'm just about finished with "Street Without Joy" by Bernard Fall. It's about France's war in Vietnam from 1946-1954. Very interesting and tragic.
So, tell me. What are you reading now?
I’m reading the bible again. I’m in 2 Samuel and once again, I’m amazed at all the good stuff I never noticed before
Eusebius “Church History”.
I agree. I found it very vivid and incredibly sad. Especially his relationship with his son and the inevitable.
“Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart” by John Guy. Wonderful book. Mary has been my lifelong heroine and this is the definitive biography of her.
It can happen here. FR exists because there are signs it is happening.
God help us
That is on my list. How do you like it so far? You know they are making a movie about it? Due out in Nov. Hope they do it justice.

Flashman is out of hand! I love those books. I need to get the one I’m missing.
It reminded me of the film "The Pursuit of Happyness." You get drawn into the main character's misery. And then it gets worse and worse and you can't see how someone could survive under such trying conditions. Then it gets even more depressing, etc. Then, when the "payoff" comes and it is anti-climactic you feel like you suffered through all of the main character's sufferings and there was little reward at all. In "Pursuit of Happyness", after nearly 2 hours of suffering, you get about 30-60 seconds of the "payoff". I felt cheated. In "The Road", I kind of felt the same way. The ending was weak. Plus, the reader never learns what happened to cause the desolation, the scenario was not very believable, etc. Initially, McCarthy's refusal to use the man's or the boy's names was novel, but it became irritating after a while, and at times it was confusing trying to figure out which he or him said or did what. I really wanted to like this book, but in the end did not.
Secret Servant, by Daniel Silva.
Great Israeli spy novel based on a lot of current events.
I’m just finishing “Crusade In Europe” by Dwight D. Eisenhower. Lots of good stuff about our media, the French and race relations. My tag-line is from this book. I’ve also started wading through “team of Rivals” another Lincoln book it seems to be chock full of oh so subtle revisionism and purposeful misunderstanding. But as Jefferson said “Eternal Vigilance”.
I love Flynn’s books as well. Just wish that he would write more!
Different strokes I guess. Although I know what you mean I thought the ending was very appropriate. As for the cause I too would have liked to have known more but for me it was not that much of a distraction.
FWIW I agree with you about Happyness.
The Lord of The Rings.... again. I never seem to tire of it.
“The Vorkosigan novels are just so good. Im forever rereading them when Im between new books :)”
I know what you mean. I am trying to decide whether to buy a copy of “A Civil Campaign” (which my library does not have) or wait until “Miles In Love” comes out in March 2008.
BTW -- here's a veal stock recipe from BH&G: Veal Stock
The Road is a great book, hard to put down!
If you like westerns (even if you don’t try it anyway, you’ll like it) Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses is a very good story- I just finished that one Monday.
I started McCarthy’s The Crossing this week and plan to read a few more of his books in the coming months. Great author with a unique style of writing.
Ask about inter-library loan. “A Civil Campaign” was very, very good. If I hadn’t already read it, I don’t think I could wait 5 months.
I didn’t know they were re-releasing those in hardcover. I never owned Komarr and my 18 month old daughter ripped the back cover off my paperback copy of “A Civil Campaign” just yesterday. Now I have an excuse to get this one in March. Thanks for the tip :)
