It is incredible that modern men can doubt the declaration by the Romans in charge of the execution! Roman crucifixion was an execution means meant to mete out torture before death, and the Romans even malleted the criminals, breaking their legs so they died quicker while in excruciating agony when needed. That Romans knew Jesus was dead so they didn't mallet His legs is attested by the care one soldier took to thrust his spear into Jesus's side before passing the mallet bearer along to the next victim hanging there up on Golgotha. Had there been any life left in Jesus for the Romans to squeeze for more torture, it is not likely they would have passed on the malleting. He was --to their trained minds-- no longer there to torture. And this is further attested because Pilate agreed to have a seal affixed to the tomb of a dead man whereby stealing the body would have been detected, at the behest of the Jewish leaders! Scripture tells us that the man was gone BEFORE the stone was rolled away. Talk about your Star Trek transporters! Solid rock wouldn't hold Him.
