TACOMA, Wash. -- Margaret Wingerter is amazed her Shetland pony is still alive after having its face chewed off by pit bulls.
The veterinarian needed to use nearly 300 stitches to repair the injuries.
"His face was just hanging off," Margaret said. "Both sides were literally just hanging open, gaping open."
Over the weekend, two dogs attacked the pony in the middle of the night. Neighbors rushed in with pool cues and beat the dogs away, but not before the damage was done.
Margaret was keenly aware of what happened to Sue Gorman, a Gig Resident, last week when two pit bulls entered her home and severely mauled her.
"You read about someone else like the lady that got attacked and it was like horrific, and you just it makes you sick," she said.
The dogs that attacked Gorman were captured and will likely be destroyed, but the two that attacked Margaret's pony disappeared into the neighborhood along the Puyallup River Road.
"The dogs were soaked with blood dripping off of them from the attack," said Jack Wingerter. "So those dogs went home to some parents or some family and they know something happened. But whether they come forward or not, we don't know."
The couple has grandchildren that are always around and say they now fear for their safety.
The Wingerters say the owners may believe these dogs to be harmless, but now that the pit bulls have attacked they need to be considered extremely dangerous.
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is investigation.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Could have been just about any breed of dog. Dogs are domesticated wolves. If you let them run loose in a pack, they will sometimes stalk and kill prey.
Breed of peace strikes again. Will someone please exterminate these beasts?
Actually, it was a trick question. The best thing to have in the house was... A man. Next, a big dog, and after that, a gun.
You assume that you are home to use the gun. Who protects your family when you are away, or coming home late?
My dog spends the day in a 16x16 kennel, and comes in if I am gone, and at night. I often take him on runs in the woods, or my kid does.
When the little kids are in the yard, he is out with them. I guarantee that those kids are fine while they're playing, because the only folks that can get IN the yard are the neighborhood ladies.
You could do the same.
Actually if it was my pony, I would hunt the dogs down.”

Ditto....dead pit bulls.
I think they should be illegal to own....way too many reports of attacks on humans, and pets. It’s quite apparent that the “losers” who own them (yes, I said losers...who else would have such a macho complex as to want one???) should be charged with assault and fined to high heaven when their “pet” attacks.
When my last dog died it hurt so bad that I swore I would never get another- But after two weeks of every noise waking me up and worrying about my family when I was on the road... yep, 2 weeks later I got the pup I have now.
He's a Sheppard, as the Wolf/Malamute was a little too owly around small kids (played to rough). He sure does his job. I sleep well at night. I will always have a big dog.
I have a neighbour down the street who has a female pit bull. She is the kindest, gentlest dog you will ever find. I have never even heard her bark and she would not even chase the stray cat that I have raised from a kitten when she sees her. To show her affection, she will lick any uncovered skin on your leg until you move out of range! It depends on how dogs are brought up, just like kids.

You’ve got a “loser” neighbor.
If more people would take the time to find out about a dog before going out & buying we would all be better off. Too many dogs are bought for the wrong reasons & end up chained in the back yard or left to roam. Or they end up in shelters. Its not fair to the dogs or the neighbors.
If you are scared to walk in your neighborhood you might want to get a cattle prod and walk with that if there are wild roaming dogs. My friend walks her dog and carries her cattle prod and nobody has complained. If her dog is attacked she has no problem zapping the attacker and it works. Works on muggers too I would imagine.

Sometimes a dog is a cat. And once I saw a dog that was a complete diningroom set with china cabinet, but that was a long time ago.
Animals are bred for various purposes.
Take the Chihuahua, it was bred as a walking larder for a Mexican family.
That must be the reason a Mexican fast food cafe uses a Chihuahua in their ads.

“Dog expert” to identify pit bulls? I’m not an expert but I can recognize pit bulls on sight. A large percentage of these breed dogs are dangerous. Just because yours is not don’t make silly statements.

But then some of these clowns move out in the country on their 1/2 acre lot and think the farmers land next door is for there pet to play on. That's when they attack pony's and someone has to put them down.
Are you aware that when a Chicago-based pit rescue group examined dog attack stories in the media, they found 60 cases where other breeds (including breeds not remotely similar to pits, such as a couple of Labs) had been identified as pit bulls’
Thats happened in a incredibly large number of media reports over the past three decades, which is why I don’t accept the so called ‘statistics’ on ‘pit bull attacks’.
Its become as bad as the media confusing a semi automatic pistol with a Uzi....calling it ‘full auto’.
I was wondering how the dogs that ran off were positively identified as Pits. At night in the middle of melee there was a dog expert around to determine they were Pits....
Everybody is wise to question the knee jerk claim it was ‘pit bulls’.
Actually if it was my pony, I would hunt the dogs down.
