I was one of the first Americans that visited the University of Geophysics in Brno after the USSR had invaded.
They still had tanks at roads blocks around the city.
We were visiting family friends in Diamond Bar Calif.
Folks were playing bridge and I went in and told everyone the Soviets had just invaded Czechoslovakia.
They told me it must be old newsreels. I said no it is happening right now. They all insisted i was nuts then came in and saw that yes it was happening.
They’d better watch their selves cause the bear is growling again and the bear doesn’t like the way they are being treated by their former east european slaves countries.
Yet another reason Gomulka deserves to rot in Hell.
My parents were in the streets of Prague, along with all the other young people, protesting against the tanks in the days after the invasion. After it became clear that there was no reasoning with the occupiers and that the tanks were there to stay, my dad turned to drawing and pasting up protest posters, similar to the graffiti mentioned in the article, at the risk of many years of hard labor if he was caught. I love my parents and am proud of them for many reasons, but this incident in their lives in my opinion stands above all others.
The August invasion was the last military action that the Soviet Union took against one of its satellite states....for now. Putin is trying to put the Soviet Union back together.
