McKidd Finds Last Legion

Former Rome star Kevin McKidd, who appears in the upcoming film The Last Legion, said that the movie takes a new look at the legend of King Arthur. The Scottish actor plays Wulfila opposite Colin Firth as Aurelius, Ben Kingsley as Merlin, Aishwarya Rai as Mira and John Hannah as Nestor.

"It's a movie that takes quite a bit of license with the origins of the King Arthur legend and Excalibur and Merlin and that fable," McKidd said in an interview while promoting his upcoming NBC time-travel series Journeyman. "We're directly linked to the final legion that were lost. There was a famous legion that was supposedly lost without a trace and were kind of left in England when Rome withdrew from their occupation of England."

McKidd shot the movie in various locations around Europe a couple of years ago. "We shot that in North Africa and Slovakia," he said. He added that he had forgotten about the movie until he saw it being advertised a couple of weeks ago. "I went to see Ratatouille the other weekend and saw a poster for it, and that's the first I've known about its release date," he said.

McKidd added: "It's kind of an imaginative romp through Europe, but it's a lot of fun, a lot of action, and it's kind of a fantasy tale that tries to link those two stories." The Last Legion opens Aug. 17.

This fall, McKidd will star in Journeyman, which tells the story of a San Francisco journalist who finds himself unstuck in time, traveling back and forth across the decades to right wrongs. (NBC is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.) —Ian Spelling

It'sa triple Hubba hubba if'n you're fond of Ben Kingsley. I *love* the historical fiction approach to Arthur over all the fairy-dairy-hocus-pocus-Merlin-magic lore. I really enjoyed Jack Whyte's novels for that reason (the racy bits and poor characterization aside).

Did you ever see the movie The House of Sand and Fog? Ben Kingsley played the lead brilliantly (as usual). I later read the book and while the movie fairly accurately followed the book, the book was clearer in terms of choices available, made and outcomes. Can't say either book or movie were particularly uplifting, but it was a good cautionary tale.

I don’t know who Kevin McKidd is. I’ll have to check him out on IMDB.

I take it his 'traveling back and forth' might be considered 'Quantum Leaps'! At least there are existing scripts for a couple of years for this show.

Sort of like 'King Arthur', released just 3 years ago. Isn't there any originality left in Hollywood. For example, a nice biography of Charles Martel or his grandson Charlemagne would not be inappropriate. Or the story of Roland.
