The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

You’d think they’d make fashionable steel-toed pumps! :)

Got more cleaning to do and I’m thinking about being a bad hobbit and making brownies again....this time with the cocoa nibs.

Mmmmm....cocoa nibs....

If we stay home I may make brownies too. Sounds like an excellent idea for a winter’s night. LSA

In honor of g'nad, whom we haven't heard from lately. Hope all is well!

Wow, beautiful blanket! How long did that take you?

We've not been able to check in, and are wondering how everyone is?...how's Talon's mom? 2J's job? Corin's so-called "life"... (g'nad's wordology not mine) :-)

We are home and plan to go back on Monday...though I understand we may be getting some ice/snow? Our house is 20 min in good traffic, and 45 min in bad traffic away from the hospital.

We went to the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica yesterday. It was beautiful. Most of it was done in the Byzantine style... 83 million tile in the mosaics... thatsalottatiles... took 80 years...

A few of the chapels were done in the Italian style.

We've also been to two new libraries.

g'nad is doing well, though his appetite is down and he puked (to use James's work) after lunch yesterday. So far so good today.

We're due for "wintry mix" the next two days, but no accumulation...

We love you guys. Thanks for praying.

Mrsnad

Thanks for keeping us up to date. Hope the puking won't last too long. ;o)

That cathedral is beautiful! I love the Byzantine style.

Mmmm. Brownies sound good, I just don’t know if I can get up from this chair. We worked outside today. We set up one of the tubes and poured concrete in it, to make one of the foundation pilings for the deck. We may not get the chance to do any more until next Friday. It’s supposed to rain, sleet, mix, etc all week, and be at freezing or below. On Friday, the forecast is for partly sunny and 39 degrees! It’ll be a HEAT WAVE! Unfortunately, I’ll have to stop working about 4 so I can shower and get ready to go get Clare. She flies in that evening, and we’re going to a concert in Boston.

Well, you flung a craving on me, so I had to make some. Had a box of brownie mix, and added Ghiradelli Dark Chocolate and White Chocolate chips. Mmmm.

So good to hear from you! Stay safe on the highways...

Quick update: Talon's mom is apparently doing better, Jen & Talon are travelling to Texas to see her this weekend. Corin is finding more and more reasons not to do the Christmas show next year. No word from 2J, presumably her training is keeping her too busy to report. Everything else seems to be going along on its way...

Another quickie for Saturday Night Gun Pron (tm), as the parts for completing the Mossberg trickle in. The shotgun currently looks like this, with the Docter sight on it just for photographic purposes, since it won't be used in the final configuration:

The new items are the Urban/ERT sling, and the Eagle MOLLE shotshell pouch on the sling. Matt Murray, the brains behind Urban/ERT Slings , is also a full-time SWAT cop, and trainer. His slings are more than simple straps, and let you wear the weapon, rather than just carry it. And if his dozens of variations won't get the job done, he'll work with you on some custom design.

I also discovered, after much adjusting, that the original Eagle shotshell stock loops/pouch/cheekpiece will work on a M4 stock. And the sliding stock still works as intended. So I have a suede cheekpiece on the left side of the stock, and a zippered pouch and some shell loops on the right:

Those shells in the elastic loops are flechette rounds, which I like keeping separate from the other ammo, but still handy.

And speaking of shotgun ammo, here's a sample of some of the rounds I have either in the pouch, or in an out-of-sight location. The nice thing about a 12ga pump shotgun is you can fire all sorts of ingenious things, including wooden "slugs" and rubber "buckshot".

From left to right, we have: Safety Disk close-range ammo, a GI door-busting round, good ol' #4 buck (a good compromise between range/number of pellets/lethality/penetration), Fiocchi flechette round, a 500gr sabot slug round, and an experimental Remington "anti-riot" round from the early 1970s. It's loaded with polyethylene pellets which lose energy quickly, but can still sting. It is also loaded to provide maximum noise and muzzle flash.

After the optics are installed (still waiting-for-parts), the Mossberg will be complete. I think I'll attach the M10 bayonet, and see if they'll let me in to some spiffy country club to hang out with all the Perazzis and other high-end sporting guns.
