The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

So, Jr. gets to class and finds out the school has no hot water and the carafe he brought wasn’t enough...and his blade was dull.

See, every cloud has a silver lining.

Yeah, pretty much all of the South and SW. As you go north you hit ‘soda’ country and then isolated areas of ‘pop’.

Wal-Mart may have good prices, but I lose my mind every time I walk in the door.

Jen is my witness...

I don’t function in Wal-Marts. Which is why I’ve been to the one here about once, at six in the morning, to get Harry Potter.

Does it think you’re from Boston or something? ;-)

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

The Northeast

Philadelphia

The Midland

The South

Boston

The West

North Central

Yes, the questions about my "accent" are annoying. Regional vocabulary is a different matter. Yes, I drink pop, not soda. I put water in a bucket, not a pail. Things like that. Nothing wrong with either usage, and I can usually figure out what someone means.

Other regional accents are fine, as long as you don't come off sounding like a liberal.

Of course I don't have an accent. But lets not get rude and call it the lowest common denominator...

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The West

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

Worse. Philly.

I usually get Midwest on those tests, but I didn't really see that as an option. And it was just based on pronunciation, so I don't take it too seriously.

Eek, Philly? That test is obviously flawed.

Big’ol and I just compared answers. His results were way off for him. He’s an New Englandah but it put him in the inland north. He just spent the last 5 minutes telling me my answers were wrong and how I don’t pronounce things correctly (”Can’t you see they spelled differently??”) Woah, buddy, I’m the one with no accent here *and* I say my H’s. *grumble*mumble*

Dad also says “ruff” for “roof” and “melk” for “milk”. OK, so I do that last, too. And my younger siblings ridicule me. I apparently also say “wush” instead of “waaawwsh”. So sue me...
