The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

A successful early morning,, then. ;-)

I’m up, at least. And Halvah and Cisco have been fed. Halvah, as usual, helped herself to as much of Cisco’s food as she could grab before asking for her own bowl to be refilled.

Off in a few minutes to get my hair cut. Who schedules a hair appointment for eight thirty on a Saturday? Ugh... Dunno what I was thinking.

Success!! Found a 4” wide, 8’ long pre-painted trim that matches the trim I’ve already got. And I could fit it in thecar without having to tie the trunk down. Guess that means I should get a 6’ step ladder so I can paint the garage.

Oh. And I picked up more Turkey too.

Okay, need some more NaNo prep assistance.

I need to identify nine different "eras" of American history. They lie between 1854 and 2052. Here's what I have so far:

  1. 1859 - 1877: Civil War >> Reconstruction
  2. 1878 - 1913: The Gilded Age >> The Progressive Age
  3. 1914 - 1929: The Great War >> The Jazz Age
  4. 1930 - 1945: The Great Depression >> WWII
  5. 1946 - 1968: The Cold War & Civil Rights
  6. 1969 - 1980: The Electronics Age
  7. 1981 - 2001: The Information Age
  8. 2001 - 2027: The Age Of Space Exploration
  9. 2027 - 2052: The Marchite War

The last two ages cover events in my universe.

I have to have nine journals (or volumes); hence, nine historical ages. Dare I combine the Civil War and Reconstruction?

The books were written as a guide to financial security for his new friends and their descendants, as a routine for a lonely man with an eidetic memory who is stranded outside his normal time, and as a hope that sharing his future knowledge will mitigate a hideous future.

Excellent - good show indeed. Six foot step ladder is always handy to have.

Driveway sealing done; yard mowed, acorns/branches picked up, birdbaths scrubbed. Time for lunch.

If your setting is in the South, I'd say probably not. But it depends on who your main character is/are.

Yes, although in a flax latex interior. Think I’ll go with something scrubbable.

‘Course I’ll have to learn how to mud drywall joints first.

If you got it, use it! I'm fixing to paint some siding to replace the stuff we pulled off the back of the kitchen bump out. We got the single French door in last night; it shore is purty. SirKit and Joseph are fixing to install the double window on that same wall. It's gonna be nice having the back of the house closed up again!

We also have new double French doors for the den, to replace the sliding door there, but that's gonna have to wait until we get the new deck built, so they'll have something to stand on while they're doing that job. ;o)

Are these sociopolitical or technological eras? Technologically, the civil war kick-started a lot of progress that continued up through the heavy industrial revolution, so I guess you could combine them. Certainly someone who started writing in 1854 could still be writing in 1877; and because the journal contains their remembrances, they wouldn’t necessarily divide the volume at the start of Reconstruction. They may just consider it one era - namely their lifetime.

The books were written as a guide to financial security for his new friends and their descendants

Missed that part before...

From a financial POV, your characters would have found the most security in investing in the infrastructure of the North. The foundaries, the railways, the factories, the trade routes, etc. Cha'ching.

Mudding, taping, and sanding the joints is pretty easy. It just takes time, patience and a couple of hand tools.

Outdoor fish tank update... I got some feeder goldfish... they were only 19 cents ;~)

The food cost more than the fish.

I'll probably bring them inside around the end of October early November... Back out in the spring... or into a big stock tank if they've gotten too big :~)

In other news... we stopped at Petsmart and bought a tag for Barkley with his name and phone number on it, so I guess it’s official.

And we stopped at a garage sale where I bought a puzzle. I’ll be doing that all afternoon. :~)

Gosh, it's getting so it's cold in here in the mornings! Most days I hardly notice, 'cause I'm going from warm bed to hot shower to out the door with the bike...but weekends...it takes awhile to warm up.

I'm determined to hold out on turning on the heat, though. It still counts as summer until you turn on the heat, no? Kinda? Maybe?

Something that surprised me, though, is that when I got my latest power bill, they have that section which compares your usage to last year - and they *say* the average temperature last year was the same as this year for the past month. That don’t make no sense to me.
