The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

That’s usually how writing works!

What was your theme that year - I forget?

Heh...for that matter, I’m not sure I remember what *I* did in 2005...

Short version: Political consultant has a girlfriend in every city. He’s killed and wife finds out about his past.

OK, I vaguely remember that.

Gonna finish it?

Yeah, I think so. It needs substantial work. But I think the story line is pretty good.

2005 was my best NaNo year, I think. Or no, maybe that was 04... yeah... 05 was bad and 06 not much better. Gotta come up with a theme this year.

One of the things I really liked from my 04 story was the setting (a magical world with technology “halfway between” our world and Faeryland). I kind of want to try something set there again...

I pretty much copped out in ‘05. I wrote the journal of a very boring person. Very easy to do....I just had to come up with a few days’ worth of blather every evening.

Last year was by far my toughest year. Goes to show you shouldn’t cheat, I guess. But I did get a lot farther with my story than I would have otherwise. On the downside, I think it’s come to a point where the *main character* (amnesia chick) isn’t essential to the story, and to make the whole thing work, her narrative is going to have to come out. All eighty thousand words of it or thereabouts.

That’s not supposed to happen, is it?

Was ‘05 the year with the gal who does landscaping in a place with magic and technology at opposite ends of the world?

Or am I mixing a couple together?

I think that was 04. That was my best year, I really liked that world which is why I’d like to go back.

My 05’ is probably my most complex plot, my ‘06 attempted to be emotionally complex but wasn’t so successful. I’m optimistic about 07 because it is more like my ‘05 story (stuff gets blown up).

Still going with the anti-Stephanie Plum type story?

I picked up one of those books from the library on Saturday - hope to start it during lunch.

How are things?

It needs work, but it ain’t half as bad as I thought it was.

Speakin' of which do you still offer services as an editor/consultant. Just askin' in case I actually finish my story this year.

Things seemed to go ok, though I got hit with a big case of self-doubt. I had some chocolate and that made it all betterl.

Not doing the anti-Stephanie Plum, tho that story needs to be written. I'm doing my UK gone Islamic story and I'm *extremely* excited about it.

I'm not really doing anything "official" with it, but I'd be happy to do that for you....

How did your lunch hour go?

I need something really interesting. Inspiring. Fun. I feel the itch in my fingers... the itch to torture characters I like, thrust them through emotional wringers and bring them our the other side...

So today...

Jr. got up and made his bed, went to class, came home and is working on school work, is heading to work and plans to come home after closing and finish the assignment for tomorrow.

Surely, these are signs of the end times.

You know, I noticed in my time at community college how many kids who had clearly been slackers in high school, cared about school work now. I think it’s because they have more freedom and feel more invested in the classes.

Lunch went quickly. I didn’t come away with a clear read on things, really. So we’ll see. I got back to the car and got hit with the omigoodness-am-i-doing-the-right-thing self-doubt thing.
