The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I worked out the geneology back to the late 1800's over the weekend. (tis' an important part of the story)

My problem will be keeping focused on the action aspect of my story and not all of the deep philosophical themes that keep popping up. For instance, the parallel experiences of the Scottish Highlanders and the American Indians and how that translates into some common behaviors/attitudes in the 21st century. Must stay focused, must stay focused...

Speaking of sex... I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking at here, but I have a feeling young slugs shouldn't watch.

I’ve got a better outline for this year than in years past. The year I actually finished needs a lot of work because people’s ages and story lines don’t match up.

This year I’ve got an outline already. My MC is 56 and I’ve mapped out the years and included some of the significant events in history.

And the South Carolina Dept of Tourism is sending me all kinds of info.

:-)

I can’t imagine how books got researched before the internet, I tell ya. I swear my head is going to burst from everything that I’ve been stuffing in there. For instance, I downloaded flora/fauna surveys of the region where my story will take place. I can tell you what percent of which acre is pine vs. willow vs. blaeberry, whether or not rare fungi spp have been spotted, and how many midge galls were found on trees. I found deed data for the lands going back to the 1300s including transcriptions off of historical maps and modern scholarly opinions on the etemology of the place names. As I get into this culture, I can really see where Tolkein got his influences. Every place has a name, every name means something, and knowing the name makes you part of the place.

Trust me, we’re not wasting this youth stuff ;-) It was thundering last night and I’ve had a headache for three days.

Hmm, now I need a plot.

Hmm, now I need a plot.

It was a dark and stormy night. Fortunately, I had a headache.

I wouldn’t have predicted slugs would be likely to be agile and athletic enough to do something like breeding in mid-air, so that part is impressive.

I’ve also learned that slugs are hermaphrodites, they’re both male and both female. I wonder if they both get pregnant. Boy, that would make it a lot more fair if it worked that way. :~)

Ah come on. Then who would do the all important task of standing there saying ‘push!’?

I’d never given much thought to the way slugs reproduce. Eeem... I guess knowledge is always good, but...

Heh...speaking of ew...a gal over on one of the bike forums at which I lurk sometimes had a predicament today - she and her husband put out one of those live traps (like you mentioned maybe using for the cats) in order to catch a woodchuck that had been causing them some trouble (digging around their barn), and they caught - a skunk! Eek! Not a good thing to have in a live trap! They managed to open the trap (with a tarp around it in case it sprayed) without startling it and are hoping it’ll wander away, but gosh...I can just picture the discussion they must have had, trying to figure out how to handle that!
