The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Haven’t really thought about nano ideas at all. Not per se. Time to dust off the pile of old plots and see what falls out.

(failure points would be at the seams and fastenings). Cotton tears very easily.

*takes notes*

Just last night we were talking about something and I noted that something would be an interesting nano plot... argh! I can’t remember what it was. I hate it when plots are on the tip of my mind.

"How to Get High" and was about all the natural "highs" you can pursue instead of chemical dependancies.

*Takes more notes* Hey wait... you did not tell us anything about 'how'!

I’m still hoping to dream up a plot the last week of October or so...

Regarding sticking a term paper into a NaNo story...why not? ;-) Sounds good to me!

You could do that one on voting machines and make the nano story a political thriller. Nah... How about a cheezy hacker story?

I don’t remember talking about anything that would be interesting for NaNo. Huh.

I’m so plotless this year.

Yah... Would be good. Not sure when though. This weekend I’m thinking about staying up here to tend to cleanups and other domestic stuff. But maybe not. Then next week is labor day weekend. Not sure what that means.

Maybe this year I will try no plotting at all. I have tried over-plotting, under-plotting, I can do either so maybe flying by the seat of my pants is the way to go.

So what do you normally put in a character sketch anyway? I have been noticing that weak character differentiation is a problem for me.

Voting machines?

Eh...I’m probably just going to try to write a portion of a story I’ve had in my head for years. It’d be easy to write 50k of that...except that I almost don’t want it on paper. It’s more fun when it’s still all squishy and unformed. Putting into words will take some of that away. *snif*

Oh gosh...it is almost Labor Day, isn’t it? What’s up with that?

This summer has gone wayyyyy too fast.

I think it was when you were taking about sterotypes in scifi, like the ‘empire of just humans’ or the ‘human are a minor player’ settings.

I do kind of a before and after thing with the key plot events as steps in between. Who is the character at the beginning of the story? What are his opinions, inclinations, habits, motivations, and attitudes at the beginning? How does he respond to the events and other characters at each of the major plot points? What does he learn about himself and others? How does he change over the course of the story?

Today I was working on backstory of one of the minor characters. Where did he come from, what world events formed him, who did he love, who did he lose? How did he end up where he is today?

This character is dying, having decided to cease further medical treatment for an ailment-to-be-named later, and is going through the process of reconciling himself to his end. One of the things people do at that time of their life is to give their belongings to people they hold dear. The dying character gives the main female character a knife that he had with him when he fought in WWII. So I was working on the adventures that knife had in Germany, all the little ways that knife would be special to him, and how the MC would respond to receiving it.

Well, actually... we were playing online games, cross stitching or model building, and then there was some playstation stuff. Too hard to remember talking about science fiction.

I admire your control of matters. ;-)

In my case, I can do all the outlining and character development in the world, but when I actually start writing, suddenly character #2 will turn out to be twice the age I had planned, or fall for a minor character who then becomes character #1, or amnesia chick will suddenly become a minor character instead of character #1, etc.

At which point I give up in frustration and stick the printed out part of the story on a shelf somewhere.
