The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

So I was in the mood to read for fun and started in to Morgan Llywelyn's Lion of Ireland. I've read another book by her, Druids, that I enjoyed so she's on my list of authors I like.

Just prior to starting this one, I re-read Brown's Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, Second Edition: How to Edit Yourself Into Print which is a nice do/don't-do text. By page two of Lion, the list of literary sins (according to Brown) was already very long. Adverbs modifying weak verbs, POV that was everywhere and nowhere, telling instead of showing, showing after telling (redundancy), no consistency on interior monologue. But the cover says, "The International Bestseller", the reviews say, "The best there is in the field of historical fiction" and "celebrated as the high priestess of Celtic historical fiction". The lesson is, I think, that good mechanics take a back seat to a sellable story. As Corin says... ~disciss~.

Some of Bob Dylan’s lyrics might as well be elvish for as understandable as they are, especially as he sings ‘em

I *love* Dylan's songs... when someone else sings them. :P

I think that’s true in most popular genres, like thrillers. Most historical fiction is better written but Celtic = appeals to wiccan/pagan types = less demanding readers. It’s like how the generic romantic fiction or Christian fiction novel are horribly written, while the generic science fiction novel has better mechanics.

Sigh. Trust me to fall in love with a genre that demands more than ‘just’ a story...

I was going to suggest you try writing in some other genre for a change... but now the idea of you trying to write a ‘bodice ripper’ is going to amuse me the rest of the day.

Oh, is that what we're doing today?

I'm in.

Heh...that seems to be a common sentiment. ;-)

I just can't understand a word when he sings...I can accept the weird voice, but I'd at least like to know what he's saying.

Bodice ripping can be challenging - depending on the material. Silk, Linen, some of the synthetics are very hard to tear (failure points would be at the seams and fastenings). Cotton tears very easily.

I just got back from "Substance Abuse Training" which is an annual requirement at my particular workplace. It's three hours of boredom. The first presentation was called, "How to Get High" and was about all the natural "highs" you can pursue instead of chemical dependancies. So, with their encouragement, I spent the three hours writing out character sketches and outline ideas for Nano. I'm feeling pretty happy.

Oh, and I learned a new word: Actshiality
This is the Bal'more/DC urban dialect version of the word "actuality".

I need to figure out what to write for NaNo. With the class I’m taking this semester it might be hard to squeeze in. I dunno. At least I’m not changing jobs in the middle of the month this time.

I have resolved to at the least start NaNo, we’ll see if I can keep up. Maybe I will make my character be a graduate student and have her write a term paper on computer security. Since it has to be at least 5000 words, well, there’s a start....

I did nano last year while taking two graduate courses. It can be done. What’s another 5K words?

A 2006 study found that the average American walks about 900
miles a year.

Another study found that Americans drink an average of 22 gallons
of beer a year.

That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles per gallon.

Not Bad.

And the more you drink, the worse mileage you get...

So there’s that.

Morning :~)

You want to come down here for a visit one of these weekends? I know we were supposed to come up there, but it’s very complicated for us!
