The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Hmm. Interesting. Well, you’re back and good night’s rest awaits. So there is that.

Well, MissKitty was willing to help you out of the problem of ‘too many oysters’. Hmmm. fresh oysters..

Heh. I ended up making only one pan of dressing so we still have some fresh oysters to use up. We’re waiting for it to get cold so we can make some oyster stew.

It’ll get cold soon enough. I do not miss Midwest winters.

Whoever decided that CDs should have a stupid little nearly-impossible-to-peel-off strip of tape on the top in addition to plastic wrapping should be punished severely and painfully.

We'll finally have our Christmas Dinner tomorrow night. Paul is coming over to play Rock Star and Guitar Hero with the others, and he's bringing his new girlfriend. I'm not even going to worry about what she thinks of the disarray in the house.

I'm still hurting from the Angio Seal, so I'll either be be directing the cooking from my chair in the den, or from the kitchen table. I'll slice the white potatoes to scallop, and the sweet potatoes to roast in the oven with some sweet onions, then let the kids put everything together. We're baking a ham, so that's brainless. Joseph will be making dessert. He wants to try his hand at a Yule Log, and he'll also make some Apple Crisp. She'll be fed well, even if the house is in chaos around her. ;o) Fortunately, they're not planning to arrive before 6 or 7, so we'll have plenty of time to get the meal together.

Tonight's Saturday Night Gun Pron (tm) is brought to you courtesy of the elves at Brownell's, whose "latest products" catalog had a "last minute" item from a new manufacturer, Tactical Night Vision Co.

This "why didn't anybody think of this before" item is a small Picatinny scope accessory rail that clamps like a scope ring to one inch and 30mm scope tubes.

My first attempt at an application went better than I hoped. This well-thought-out design even has a bit of non-mar, non-slip tape on the bottom of the rings to hold it against the scope tube without any slippage. I didn't even need to get out my rosin to coat the inside of the rings (which is something I do for all scopes, along with hand-lapping them).

Here's the rail on the Schmidt u Bender scope on my AUG.

Despite appearances, that scope is mounted very low on the rifle. It requires you to snuggle up to the scope and get a good cheek weld. It makes for accurate shooting, but isn't exactly conducive to lightning-fast target engagement.

This also gave me an excuse to replace the silent-but-funky euro rubber-cup lens caps with good ol' American Butler Creek caps. Butler Creek and Harris bipods are found on series weaponry all across the western world. The caps are silent in operation, and much quicker than the rubber ones, which required turning inside out once hinged away to keep them from interfering. I was afraid this accessory rail might be a little low, but it cleared the lens cap and top turret.

With that part quickly out of the way, all that was required was to put something on the rails. Docter red dot sight with Weaver/Picatinny adapter to the rescue.

It seems a bit high, but that's because the scope is so low. In reality, it's just the right height to bring the dot into view, and engage the target quickly as the rifle is brought up to eye level. No need to crawl up the stock to use the 4x "main" scope.

That red dot has added a snap-shoot capability that I hadn't even thought about until I tried the finished product. As a red dot, it's fast, even if not as "luxurious" as the holographic reticle of an Eotech.

This accessory rail, plus a Docter, makes a lot of sense for any rifle with a high-powered scope that might also have to make quick, close-in shots at ranges far less than the "big" scope is sighted to handle. The Docter is independently sighted to whatever short range you feel is necessary. You now have two zeroed-in sights on the same rifle.

And the Docter is fast. I felt I could hunt upland game with this setup, or play a couple of rounds of whack-a-mole. I should work well on pop-up targets.

If you have any kind of a scoped rifle, and feel you could encounter small, fast, close-in targets, this $69 accessory can add a whole new capability to it. You just need enough scope tube to mount the ring.

I was amazed at how this transformed the AUG. I will certainly add this rail to scopes on other rifles, as time and finances permit.

Sorry, it looks like Brownell's required acceptance or renewal of a certificate to view their image. I spend so much time there, I hadn't noticed.

Don't worry, it won't affect anything except your wallet, if you get bitten.

Wonderful pictures, XGI!! Everyone looks so happy; your photographer did a good job of capturing the mood of the celebration!! I especially liked the picture of Mrs.XGI holding up the marriage license, similiar to how I felt when OB and I got married. LSA

Morning, that seems to be a really tacti-cool accessory. That’s on my list. Thanks.

Question on the web-gear site. The M-1923 Cartridge Belt had an interior snap/strap. Do you know if they all did? Mine doesn’t have the interior snap/strap.

I guess 50’s will have to qualify as “low” unless we want oyster stew at 3:00 am.

We’ve got a nice steady rain right at the moment.

It’s worth a trip to town! But you have to go through about 5 traffic circles to get there ;~) Lacey’s nuts about them.

We’ll go back sometime.... Should have had you come along this time!

If you’re just hangin’ out today so are we... feel free to come over :~)
