They're also having an "Extreme Trail Horse Competition" at a local arena on Saturday afternoon around 3. I've got no idea what it entails, but I'll bet it'll be something like Extreme Cowboy Race on RFDTV, so I think I'll go check it out. Kari may go with me if they get back from riding in time. Should be interesting. Pictures will follow of course.
Well that sounds like a good time, on both counts!
We’ll look forward to the pictures!
I’ve got the horses grazing in the yard... green grass... mmmm.
I got home too late to get pictures of Lace being ridden but apparently she behaved very well :) I'll get pictures tomorrow. This is the panel she took out a couple of days ago - it's upside down.
Slick being sacked out and then backed for the first time today.
The mods at the new forum okayed me but all I've done is pop in to post on your thread - no chance yet to read much.
Still mystified at the Horse Forum, it's been down over a week.
Goodness... destruction and yet progress!
I’m not sure I’d have wanted to back him just that way... maybe there’s more room there than I think, but it looks like he could get to bouncing into things... but I assume it went safely for him?
It all went very well, Slick didn’t do more than flick his ears. It was safe, although it doesn’t look it - Bob was standing right at Slick’s head. Troy wanted to do it there - he said horses usually feel less secure standing on concrete and therefore, less inclined to pitch a fit.
Well, it sounds like a reasoned strategy!
That’s why he’s the pro and I’m the chicken. :~)
He’s been fascinating to watch. I think Lace and Slick will be pretty close to spook proof when he’s done. They are already thinking before reacting.
We went ahead and went to the drive-in last night and it was fun. Both movies were REALLY good. But we didn’t get to use the lounge-chair-in-the-back-of-the-pickup-truck setup that I’d wanted because it rained. It was clear when we got there before dark but you could see sheets of rain falling in the distance, so we waited in the truck, hoping it would pass before the movie started, and it did, but it started sprinkling again about half way through Dark Knight so we just turned the truck around to face the screen and watched it from inside. It’s a good thing too because shortly thereafter the bottom fell out and there was thunder and lightning and the whole 9 yards. It actually got kinda hard to hear for all the rain falling on the roof, but it didn’t last too long and we got to watch Hancock with the windows down. We got out around 12:30 and drove home and it didn’t look like it had rained here much at all. :-/
So I’ve been lazy this morning and slept late. I’m just now beginning to stir around. HaveFaith called a little before 9 to see what I was doing and woke me up. Good thing, or I’d still be laying there. She was meeting BladeRider and Shirley out at the horse camp for a ride. Sure wish I could go, but I guess I’ll do a little work around the house and maybe call a guy about some hay. If it’s not raining this afternoon I’ll go to the Extreme Trail Horse Competition.
I’m starving right now though so I’m off to rustle up some breakfast, although it’s nearly lunchtime. Hubby left early this morning to eat breakfast with his Dad like they always do. I should’ve told him to bring me something! ;o)
I was just scanning back and realized that I hadn’t answered you. Sorry about that! The ankle is swelling a lot but seems to be doing pretty well. I went back to work on Wednesday after I saw the bone doctor and got the boot. I try to keep it proped up on top of my PC tower that sits under my desk as much as possible. My co-workers have been good to bring me stuff so I don’t have to get up as much and they get the doors and carry my stuff when we go out to lunch. They’re a good bunch!
Dang! What did Lace do to tear up that panel like that? She must’ve pitched a good one!
The pics of Slick are great. Looks like a nice crosstie/bathing setup you’ve got there. Wish I had it! I’ll have to keep that in mind when I build my barn. That and your Patience Poles.
Glad you are feeling better and have help at work.
My hip is still bothering me and I really should see my doctor. I never went back for a follow up. My friend, Maureen is a fitness trainer and does classes in the pool at the local club. I am thinking of doing some of those exercises in the water to help build some strength. We took a tour of the club last night after dinner. We went to celebrate my birthday, which was Tuesday.
Your Birthday is tomorrow! Well Happy Birthday early. So many of my good friends have birthday in July. I knew I really liked you for some reason! :)
Was that Slick's first time of being ridden?
Kids went to a show across the State. They left on Wednesday and should be home today. Alison showed on Thursday, Friday and today. She did very well placing in her classes and winning the Showmanship yesterday. This was a AQHA show and they are going for the Small Fry regional championship.
Yep, Lace pitched a real fit. She decided she was not at all interested in being trained, then got appaloosa mad and decided to leave the round pen, over or through it. Troy just kept on working her after she found out that although she really wrecked a panel, she wasn’t out and finished with the trainer.
I’m surprised watching him with them, patient as can be but determined - no fuss, no hitting them, no yelling, just constant as the wind, just keeps on working. I didn’t get to see Lacy ridden yesterday for the first time but Bob said she behaved perfectly so I guess she decided she might as well cooperate.
Truthfully, I would have more expected that behavior from Slick but I realized, he’s more thoroughbred in attitude and behavior so he really doesn’t get angry. He is just nervous until he figures out what is going on.
The cross ties and patience poles are worth their weight in gold.
Happy Birthday - lots of July birthdays here :)
Yes, that was the first time Slick was backed. He wasn’t actually ridden, that will happen Monday I guess.
Congratulations to Allison.
Well Happy Belated Birthday to you! There’s quite a few of us here on the thread with birthdays in July. HaveFaith and Becky’s are even on the same day no less.
You really should get your hip checked out again if it’s still bothering you after several weeks. I’m assuming that they x-rayed it and ruled out a fracture. It could just be a deep bruise, but it could be something else, like a strain or tear. Sometimes exercise is good and sometimes it’s not, depending on what’s going on in there. That’s why I wanted an MRI of my shoulder, just so I’d know what I’m dealing with. You take care of yourself!
It’s funny, our trainers have the same name. It’s good that your’s is that patient. I’m not. I wish I was. Constant as the wind sounds like a good way to be...with most everything.
Secretariat's owner, the always gracious Penny Chenery, is consulting on the film. I don't have any details about the project at this time, but will share them here when they become available. Big Red's jockey, Ron Turcotte, is still with us, but his trainer, Lucien Laurin, and Red's favorite groom, Eddie Sweat, have passed on. Still, there are enough people around who were close to the great horse that this can be an accurate and terrific film if Disney does it right.
Word is they have auditioned horses who closely resemble Secretariat physically. :)
Secretariat, the all-American Big Red hero who carried white and blue silks and wore a white and blue bridle.
Red's enormous stride is on display as he begins his legendary move in the Preakness, when he circled the entire field of horses on the first turn.
Secretariat and Ron Turcotte on their way to immortality in the Belmont Stakes. This famous photo was snapped as they were in deep stretch and Ronnie looked over to check the race timer. Look at his hands. He never let out the reins and never asked Red to run. To this day, Ronnie says the horse did it all on his own.
The Secretariat bronze at the Kentucky Horse Park. Ron Turcotte up, Eddie Sweat restraining the great horse.
On hand at the dedication, from left to right, Penny Chenery, Ron Turcotte, and Red's exercise riders Charlie Davis and Jim Gaffney.

Wow!! Thanks for the heads-up!! I’d LOVE to see a movie about Big Red! And thanks for all the great pictures too!
They had a timed course set up in the arena that started with the mailbox. You had to take the mail out of the box, close it, show it to the judge, then put it back and close it...
The next obstacle was a rope gate with dangly pipes hanging down from it. You had to unsnap it, ride through it, then hook it back...
Next was a "water" obstacle that consisted of a tarp...
Then you had to play "Polo". You had to get the broom out of the barrel and the ball out of the tub, then get the ball through the hoop...
Then came the "Bridge"...
Then you had to catch a "fish" using the rod and reel provided in the stand. The "fish" was a sack full of rocks. Once the fish was "caught" you had to return the rod to the stand...
Then came "The Tunnel"...
Then the "Merry-go-Round". You had to lift the pole off the cradle and make a complete circle around the center pole with it and put it back...
Then came the tarp curtain...
Then you had to drag a tire with a plastic pool floatie in it around a series of cones...
Then finish up by loading in the trailer. Time was called as soon as the trailer door closed...
As you can see, there was quite a variety in the competitors and horses. Some made all the obstacles, some didn't.
My favorite was this little girl and her pony. She made every obstacle except the tire drag and she was at a disadvantage there because the tire weighed almost as much as her pony and she didn't have a saddle horn to dally to. I wanted pictures of her whole run but I ran out of battery :-<
There were some gorgeous horses there too...
And I was REALLY impressed with this horse. Aside from the fact that he's a roan. ;o) He'd only been ridden 20 times and did the course without a balk or a fault...
So it was definitely worth going, even though there were no gaited horses there. I think I'm going to change that statistic once I get this darned boot off my ankle, coz it looks like FUN!
