FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

I would have wanted to move too... I’d be nervous about riding alone. Hope Blackie moves OK.

I think we have to say it’s a blessing and we have to say nice things, what else can we do? But it’s a lot for her and her family, and you, to take on. Hopefully she’ll see this as a really good time to turn her life around. Hope she can, and can get and stay healthy for the baby.

Thanks. He wanders a good part of the farm anyway so this barn is not strange territory to him. It’s actually warmer than the one we used so he’ll be more comfy in winter.

Dang CJ! I’m glad to hear your Mother’s ok! That’s scary. One of my young ones boogered out from under me about 6 weeks ago and it did something to my shoulder too. It didn’t separate but I think I’ve got rotator problems coz it still hurts like the dickens when I get it in certain positions. Did she have surgery or what? Is it still painful for her?

She was lucky, hers was between a grade 2 and 3 which is midpoint in the severity range. No surgery. She did get great relief from our chiropractor. He’s got a laser that he uses on soft tissue injuries. Of course medical insurance won’t cover it as they say it’s experimental but we both swear by it. She has a bit of pain now and again but it keeps getting better.

Please have your shoulder checked by a good orthopedic dr. I’ve had some elderly friends who let shoulder injury go for years and it really caused them problems down the road.

Luckily (if you can call it that) I was already seeing an orthopedic doctor because of my thumb ligament tear. The shoulder injury happened the Saturday before I was supposed to get my thumb cast off the following Tuesday, so he looked at the shoulder then and said he thought it was just a strain, not a tear. He’s checked it on my follow up visits about my thumb but it hasn’t been x-rayed or MRIed or anything yet. It’s better than it was, but he said if it was still bothering me at my next appt, which is the 22nd of July, that he’d do an MRI at that point.

I go to the chiropractor on a regular basis for my neck and back so I started having ultrasound treatments on my shoulder for the last couple of weeks. That’s helped SOME but I’ve got several more treatments to go. I’ll have to check into the laser treatment. I’ve heard of lasers being used to treat Carpal Tunnel but don’t know if it’s the same kind of thing or not. I’m definitely willing to try it if it’ll keep me away from the knife. Thanks for the info!

I don’t really know how long she will have to be shod like that. If I can get her feet in better shape and stronger, they wouldn’t have to have the pads. She eats the same stuff the others do and is on the same pasture and none of theirs are like that.

I know, it’s was a little sickening to think abt. doing that to animal babies, but I just had to remember what they turn into and what killers they are.

We see alot of girls that age and even as young as 12, unwed and having babies. It’s sad and most of them don’t have the support of a good mother. I wish her and her mother the best, but it sounds like she’s got alot of growing up to do. Unfortunately, all the preventative measures we try to push don’t seem to sink in and stick. Her mom probably will have a hard row to hoe for a long time. Good thing she’s got you for a friend.

12!!! My gosh, that’s just a baby! That’s incredible. I’ll bet you do see a lot of that kind of thing though, with a rural practice like you’ve got. You’ve just got to wonder what kids are thinking sometimes.

Kids aren’t thinking, that’s the problem.

Just back from taking her in...it’s not good, worse then I was expecting. Come to find out she hasn’t been taking her heart meds, only when she thinks she needs them. I could tell the doc. is very concerned, and tried to make her understand how important it was for her to take them. I got to hear her heart beat...lord, even uneducated medically me, could tell it’s bad...beats real fast for 3-5 beats then STOPS, for a second or two at a time. From what I gathered right now it’s no more of a problem then it normally is, but as the baby grows and her volume of blood goes up...it could be bad, even taking the meds. Did Kayla understand...who knows? Is all she can say it’s that’s normal heart beat for me. That comment worries me...she thinks since it’s normal for her it’s OK. He called it an irregular irregular heart beat. Going to be a long 7 months for her mother.

Hair: from what you say, would you give the meds to Nikki even earlier then 8:30??? He said they may do the job on her themselves.

Your are right, she may not be able to tolerate the pregnancy to the end. She sounds like she has her head in the sand.
Good luck with Nikki. Doesn’t sound like fun, either.

Boy that sounds bad. I sure hope she takes the doctor’s words seriously. Kids that age think they’re immortal. There was a story in the local news last week about couple of 16yr old boys and one of them was “hood-surfing” on the other’s car, going 60mph when the driver lost control and hit a phone pole. Needless to say the surfer was killed, and all the survivor could say is that they were “just goofing off”. The mindset is just incredible.

Don’t let it get to you too bad. There’s nothing you can do about it other than support your friend as best you can.

I’m sure sorry about the gal. It all sounds very worrisome.

And I’m sure the vet knows how long it will take them to work, I just wouldn’t worry too much about giving them earlier if an opportunity presents itself. It’s not going to wear off. It’s been my experience that it takes two hours but then last a long time.

And it would be super if she’s pretty much out when you get there. Poor thing, and for you, you don’t want it to be a fight I’m sure.

Hair is right. I worked as a vet tech for many years and Ace is a long lasting sedative. It will stay in her system for up to 8 hours. I would give it at 8:00 personally.

Just for you Hair...ROAD KILL... The man on the left, had just went by before the fall and he turned around and came back. Gave me a towel to lay my head on. Ambulance is on the right.

Amy and Alison hooked up Tubby today...Ya think maybe I should stick with something like this from now on!

I could never do that. Even the big 'coons were captured and let go somewhere else. To solve the problem of them getting in the barn and taking down our bird feeders, we have a dog out there. We have coyotes here also, but it seems the racoons are the ones that do the killing. We have lost chickens and little kittens.

We have some cases of kennel cough here. First it was Peaches (outdoor dog), then Rebel and now Lugar have it. I thought at first that Peaches had injured her neck from slipping her collar, but then when the other two started and she got better, I knew it was something else. None of the dogs have been anywhere, so I don't understand. Unless, one of the neighbor dogs was boarded somewhere and brought it around.

We have been treating them with drops from the pet store. Peaches and Rebel are fine now, but Lugar is still coughing pretty bad. Can he reinfect them?
