FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Hurrah! It worked!

(my mare would lie down and die if I put that stuff on her.)

There were lots of jinglebells in that stuff too, and even some on her tail. Faith is a very patient little hoss!

Let’s put it this way . . . I’m anxious about braiding eagle feathers and a beaded strip into Gracie’s forelock and riding her bareback with an Indian blanket for our Re-enactment Photo Op once I complete my buckskin attire . . . . I’m going to bring a whole bucket of treats in the hope that she’ll not pitch a lead pipe fit.

I believe I’d practice that as much as I could at home first. Wouldn’t wanna let a whole lotta people see me bust my @$$!

I think we'll work up to it gradually.

Had a lot of fun teaching her to walk over a blue tarp . . . but she did it eventually, with the aid of a lot of Mrs. Pasture's Cookies for Horses (her favorite).

And compared to that, teaching her to walk over a tippy plywood see-saw was a piece of cake!

She’s really come a long way. When I first went to look at her a 13 mos. ago, she came running towards us across her lot and I didn’t know if she was gonna stop. She swung her head all over like she was gonna hit you with it, and she bucked me all over the pasture twice. Then I took the back cinch and spurs off and tried again when it wasn’t 23 degrees and she was much better!!!

Well, we were out foxhunting at Shakerag, waiting for things to get started, and a bunch of us were larking over the obstacle course near the clubhouse . . . and one of the things they had set up was this plywood seesaw. It wasn't very MUCH of a tip, just a few inches, but it's like the seesaw in dog agility set to its very bottom height (only, of course, it's 4 feet wide).

I led her across with a treat in front of her nose, then rode her across. She was the first horse from our barn to manage it, then all the others followed her . . .

And that’s too far to go get it?

I’m in taking a break from stall cleaning.

I guess I shouldn’t complain that they use the pony’s stall as a toilet. At least it’s concentrated to one stall... the rest of it stays pretty wholesome.

Specially since there'd be fire involved. Hair's a pyromaniac.

I thought that it was Becky who was the pyro. Maybe I was mistaken. :-)

Yikes! One of my trainer's horses used to charge me in the pasture. I finally bounced a bucket off his nose, then he left me alone.

She eventually sold him. He was a very handsome and athletic horse, but too mean and tricky to trust around kids. She sold him to a pro who was going to ride him in three-day.

Hey, we're the professional pyros around here!

My husband is a charter member of Pyrotechnics Guild International. (Yes, there is such an organization. We used to go to their conventions every year. More weirdness B.C. (Before Children).)

Sadly, yes. ;-) Even I have my limits. :-)

Heh, I looked out the window and wondered why the heck you were stall cleaning in the dark, before I remembered that you're on the other side of the country. (D'oh!) We turn our clocks back on Saturday. I'll send out a ping to remind everyone then.

6 inches is a respectable amount. Has he driven in much snow before?
