We pull the shoes of everyone that doesn’t need them to stay sound over the winter. Someone would still be able to ride them to try them out if you have an area that’s not rocky.
Bleach works wonders on thrush - it kills any kind of fungus almost on contact. I spray straight bleach on any mold or mildew (which is a fungus) and it’s gone. We’ve used bleach on the horses’ feet.
Just surprise. I thought she’d prescribe one of the commercial products for it, and I wondered which one. I know the farrier jump all over people who use bleach, saying it kills good tissue as well as bad. I know I didn’t like the Koppertox I bought. Hoped she would recommend something better if I ever needed it.
I have this fear of using bleach where there’s ammonia (pee). It’s a rather toxic mix. I realize he’s not swimming in a large quantity of either one at the same time... but...
OK, well that’s good to know:) Thanks.
Becky
Well, I never thought of that, but as you say I don’t think there is really enough of either getting mixed together, so hopefully it will be OK.
As far as bleach killing good tissue, well again, I’m not going to be using bleach, according to the vet for more then 3 or 4 days...so hopefully if it does damage good tissue, it won’t be that much.
Becky
That’s true. And good info to know. :~)
The last thing that I used was the mastitis medicine, and that was on Tennessee's feet back when he had such contracted heels and had thrushy looking stuff all down in his frogs and the creases of his heels. I can't remember what it was called, but I got a box of 20 applicators full of it for about $20 at Tractor Supply and it cleared it right up. I think I've only used 4 or 5 of the applicators so far and it's been a year or two since I bought it. It's pretty good stuff. But I'm sure that she prescribes the bleach because it's something that most people have on hand, it's cheap and it does work.
There's another thrush treatment that I've heard the people over on some of the barefoot trim sites called White Lightning. It sounds like good stuff too and I've thought about ordering some of it. Read about it here.
The voice in INexperience here, but when I was going over stuff with the previous owner of my horse, who is a trainer, he told me not to use Kopertox, but suggested something called thrushbuster? (the little can is up at the barn so I don't have it handy). I used it on Hannah's horse because I think she is really prone to icky feet - and it was really damp here for a while. Seemed to work pretty well.
I know I'm jumping in here mid topic so I may totally be misunderstanding what the foot issue is. :-/ I just saw the word "Koppertox" and that rang a bell with me.
I don’t like Koppertox either.
He seemed to be concerned about the chemicals in it.
It is extremely toxic. But I think the other thing about it is that it was designed to form a barrier over whatever you put it on, supposedly to seal out moisture, but most of the time what it ends up doing is sealing IN the fungus. :-/
What I didn’t like about Koppertox was that, first of all, I have a hard time putting something on my animals that I’m not supposed to get on my skin. That’s a warning sign. Plus it said don’t get it on the horses skin or hair either, which I found impossible when pouring a liquid on an up-side-down hoof.
Plus it didn’t just kill the grass where I was applying it, it ~dissolved~ the grass. Caustic as heck.
I had good luck with the bungus I was treating using Hydrogen pyroxide. I think it might work on thrush too, who knows. But it does bubble all the gunk out nicely, and brings oxygen into the crevices, which I think kills it as much as anything.
But I wouldn’t mind handling bleach either. At least I know what it is. ;~\
YIKES! No, I wouldn't feel comfortable with that either ....
Bleach WOULD be easier. :-)
Off to take a teenager to the mall... fun
The only complaint I have with it is that I've ruined good jeans and shoes by splattering it on them, but I should've known better than to be wearing good clothes while doing that kinda thing anyways. Sometimes I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer! ;o)
Yeah, there is that.
Hey, I saw over on HH that you had gone to visit 2J. That was nice, ‘specially the pizza part. :o) Her BP sure does worry me. As little as she is, she should NOT be having BP problems, but it sounds like they’ve checked everything in the world and come up empty. I sure hope they get it under control!
Congratulations on the new kitty :~)
Sounds like he was abandoned doesn’t it? Good think he found a soft place to fall :)
think = thing
