FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Years ago, when we had a little fleabag apartment after we first got married, we had an old cranky stove with a pilot light. There was a significant delay between when you turned the knob and when the pilot light managed to light the gas, so there would be an ominous hissing noise and then a loud >WHUMP!< as the gas all ignited at once.

I turned on the stove one night, and my lady Siamese decided she would jump up to see what was going on -- cat, >WHUMP< and huge fireball all arrived at the same place at the same time.

She burned all the whiskers and long eyebrow whiskers off the left side of her face -- vaporized and melted, leaving little round balls on the end about 1/8" from her face.

I had to catch her and use nail scissors to trim off all the little melted balls because they were bothering her.

But she was so embarassed by her disfigurement that she would hide under the furniture. Long after the whiskers grew back, you could make her go under the sofa by pointing and laughing.

Well, we went out for dinner... Becky we went to the pizza place we went to when you were here... where we sat outside and the couple next to us was arguing??

Well, they’ve been closed for the last several months remodeling under new management, and we’re not sure the change is good... I mean, the food was good, but the feel of the place is no longer familiar.

For starters, they’ve redone everything in brick (the place is called The Brick) instead of the pine paneling, and it’s very hard and cold inside, and LOUD. There’s nothing in there to absorb sound. One group at a table talking, and no one else can hear anything. Not sure we’ll go back to wanting to hang out there or not.

Good morning. Snow here again :(

BladeRider, we watched the dog show last night but only caught the last half so we missed Dillion. We are going to try to find it again today. Boy, the shows are really formal - black tie the works. Though I guess it’s not much worse than the expensive horse show clothes. Seems like it makes for a nicer crowd though doesn’t it? And the judges seem a lot more hands on. Beautiful dogs all - well I was surprised with the German Shepherd - they didn’t used to be so low and angled at the rear. No wonder there are so many hip problems with them now.

Beaker, can you take some pictures of the new place? I’d love to see them.

Becky - hope all is well with you, you’re in my thoughts and prayers frequently.

Fantastic. I have always loved the Irish Setters. They are such a beautiful breed.

I saw Dillon on Saturday night. They must’ve been playing it on The Discovery Channel as well as Animal Planet because that’s where I saw it. I was glad too because I don’t get Animal Planet. I was pulling for him because he looked gorgeous, but apparently the judge liked the Weimeraner best. That English Setter was gorgeous too. Heck, they all were!

I think we recorded the right dog show to watch Dillon, but haven't watched it yet.

Today is going to be a beautiful day... time to get hay and get it home, because the rain and stormy weather returns tonight.

It was gorgeous here on Saturday and we got in a great ride, but it rained all day yesterday and looks to be doing more of the same today. We went to the place we call The Narrows, with the BIG cliff shelter. It was gorgeous as usual. But as we were heading out, going towards the old grist mill foundation, we managed to miss the trail. We kept on thinking that we could finally find it again so we kept on going but we ended up in a dead-end cove and had to back-track to get out. It was pretty rough going, but we saw some of the prettiest scenery I've ever seen. There was a waterfall at the head of the cove that was probably 100 feet high. And of course my camera battery chose this ride to run down on. But I took some with Kari's camera so hopefully they'll turn out good. Here's one shot I did manage to get before it gave out...

I'd say the bluffs in this shot are 100-150 feet high.

I have an update from Becky...

She’s fine, she wanted to let everyone know she hasn’t been posting because yesterday her keyboard decided to fail. After finally giving up trying to pound on it enough to type a message out yesterday, she called here to tell me about it, but I was outside and didn’t get the message! So she finally called again this morning.

She had some horsey news too... After getting some round bales put in, evidently Rocky overdid it and colicked a little yesterday, but a shot of banamine and a more limited schedule of giving him access to it and he’s better last night and today. Probably just the change on his system.

She’s going to get a keyboard today.

It's taken me all morning to figure this out...but these are some pictures of my new digs in Aiken along with the pasture etc. The paint in one of the pictures is the new horse, Obie.

VERY NICE estrogen! Your fencing is gorgeous!!... you messed up on the picture that shows the house, it links to the small version, but I can tell it’s beautiful as well. :~)

Interesting, I wouldn’t have pictured Aiken as predominantly pine. I should get out more.

As soon as you drive into Aiken that’s all you can smell the pine trees. I will repost the house and barn. I love it here.

Wow!! You got a nice place there!! I’d love to see more pictures of the house too. That’s my favorite style of house. And of course more pics of the barn, inside and out. You done good getting them posted. Everybody links to a thumbnail ever now and then.

Thanks for the update about Becky. Sticky keyboards are a pain! I’m glad to hear that Rocky’s ok too. He probably just stood there and stuffed his face and didn’t drink enough. Limiting his access to it will be good too, in that he won’t get too fat and he won’t eat it up so fast either.

Yeah, South Carolina, South Georgia, South Alabama, that's pretty much all you get down that way. Pine and Palmetto thickets and sand. Definately a different vegetation zone than here, and incredibly different from there!

if you double click on the thumbnail the house picture gets larger. Here is our barn...half is my husbands workshop..I have three stalls and a tack room.

Nah, it doesn't. The others do, but this one just goes to another screen with the same size picture as the one you clicked on first. But the barn picture is good. I'm assuming that the stalls are on the right side of the barn and the workshop is on the left. Looks very efficient!

Here's the house...I love the style also, always wanted a cape cod. My only complaint is the great room is small. Too small. my house">
