FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

That’s really cool about Shelly figuring out where the ball was going to BE! Anybody who says that dogs can’t THINK should try to explain THAT behavior.

Anybody who says dogs can’t think should leave a steak on the backsplash of a kitchen counter or in the sink, and watch my dogs figure out how to get at it! (as a last resort, they call in the cat and offer to divide the spoils with her.)

Well, I finally got around to uploading some pictures of our Saturday ride. You can thank BladeRider for them because I was too lazy to take any myself...

I'm the one in the straw hat with the black band. It was too hot for a helmet! I was riding Grace this time.

And here's another couple that my cousin sent me. This is her granddaughter Ella and her horse Dixie. Ella had been through her first week of school and hadn't been able to hang out at the barn as much as she was used to, so when she saw Dixie she just couldn't contain herself and had to give her a hug...to the nearest possible appendage...

She's shaping up to be quite the little Horsewoman too.
She's got her own little pink hoof pick...

Ella’s cute as a button that’s for sure. I think she’s 4 or 5. I posted her picture a while back, laying on her back on the back of a big roan Clyde/Quarter cross. Made her look like a gnat on an elephant. But she loves horses more than any kid I know, and ain’t afraida nuthin. Ya gotta love a kid like that!

A few months back I posted that we found out that Jake had a sarcoid tumor on his neck. Well the vet gave us (or should I say sold us $51 for a 1/2 ounce jar) some ointment called Xterra. You apply it for 4 days then stop for 20 days then reapply. It makes the cancerous skin slough off. It looks pretty gross, this is 1 week after treatment stopped.

I am having a hard time not pulling that scab off! We are supposed to start the ointment again this Saturday but if it still looks like this I don't think I will. It is pretty moist under that scab. Luckily the flies are not bothering it.

Man, that’s nasty looking! I think I’d have to see if I couldn’t get that scab to come off, maybe soak it with the hose and see if it wouldn’t loosen up. But I definately wouldn’t just pull it off either.

Those are great pictures.

I was wondering do you all have trouble with flies when you ride?

They have really gotten bad here the last few weeks. I’ve noticed the horses during the day will venture out of their stalls for a bit, then suddenly go running and bucking back to the stalls. Rocky’s neck is covered in bites:(. There just isn’t much you can do about the big horse flies. I’m going thru a quart bottle of fly spray about every 10-14 days, and I only spray when I ride.

MY HORSE has a special hat he wears to protect his ears from flies. Although FROG laughs at him! The flies are bad in some places and not so bad in others. One place we go has awful deer flies. Last weekend they were not bad at all.

maybe just the one, but the jar says possibly two applications. Will have to see what it looks like when the scab falls off. The vet said to let it happen naturally. This is just an herbal ointment, kinda scary how it makes the skin slough off. When I applied it I did not think to wear gloves. I did wash my hands afterwards but if I do it again I will definitely wear gloves after seeing what it did to his skin!

You know last year when we had drought conditions the flies didn’t seem as bad. They are back here tho with a vengence this year.

YOUR HORSE looks like a mule when he wears said hat! Poor dear, I'm sure it gives him a complex to be made to walk around like that! ;o)

Especially when you look at the pictures of those people who applied a similar concoction to their noses and it made their nose fall off. DANG! That's some seriously caustic stuff.

We have a new addition to our herd. A firemand that my husband works with had two TWH that he needed to find homes for. Hubby brough this one home last Friday for a test run. His name is Shane and he is a 6 year old TWH. He is quite fat and out of shape and his feet need a lot of work but he is a sweet horse and supposed to be a great trail horse.

Jake and Blade wanting in on the photo shoot

Here he is parking out. He started to move before I could step back and get the shot but you can see he stretches way on out there.

He would not get one if people did not laugh at him. He thinks he looks cool.
