This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I figured that. My casual clothes are just all pretty sad. Need some new :~)
And this is where they sleep when they're not on the table. Bear and Pearl want to be on my head and Buster is on my feet. At least I don't have to worry about being cold! ;o)
That’s a crazy cat lady picture! :~)
I saw brother last night, who is a tiger grey like those. I don’t see him every night. I think he wanders more than the sisters.
LOL,,, what a load:)...my cat insists on sleeping on my chest like that. I wake up at night, feeling like I have a ton of bricks weighing me down, and hotter then hades:). I never know how he gets there without me waking up.
Becky
I’ll lay there like that until I start to feel like I’m getting a flat spot on my backside and then I’ll throw them off and roll over. Bear won’t let me stay there very long though. He’ll come back and start poking me or digging on me so I’ll roll back on my back. He’s rotten I think. Sometimes if I want to sleep without him on me I just have to keep the squirt bottle leaned up against me as a silent threat. Then he’ll leave me alone, but he thinks it’s cat-abuse. ;o)
OOOO...my son in law just called. He has new tires put on the round bale spike, and is going to come get me to go get one of my round bales:). I’ll get one today, and the other tomorrow or Sat and the square bales.
I’m anxious to see how long a round bale lasts. I bought 6. I’m hoping they last till at least May...I may have to buy 2 more tho.
Becky
I am thinking about leaving on Sunday and stopping at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus. A dealer there has water tanks for trucks or trailers. A lot of the camping places I go too, have real hard pumps or the pump is some distance away. It would be nice to just put one of those tanks in my truck and have water for the horses. My trailer has a tank, but it is not large enough for us and the horses.
Beaker, I wish you could come to Becky's. You could have flown to Cleveland, I could have picked you up and we could have driven together.
Hey Frog, dibs on a ride on one of those smooth riding horses.
I have such a nice Son in law...he spent this whole day, and he is still on vacation, helping me haul hay. We got 2 round bales, and 10 square bales. Took two trips.
Becky
Yep, it’s almost exactly like that.
Becky
Now that might make them manageable. Can you just back into the bale with that? How do you get it on there? Did he go down the road like that?
Ah - I think I get it. You back into it, then chain it or rope around it I’d guess, then you crank it over on it’s back with the boat winch? Then how do you get it off of there?
Yeah, you just back into it, then crank it up. The spike picks it up at such an angle that it doesn’t have to be chained or anything, wish I had got a picture.
Then down the road you go.
You back up to where you want to set it, unlock the crank, let it down, and drive off, the spike comes out. Just like the spikes they use on tractors to move round bales...no chains or ropes.
Becky
You crank it till that one end is resting in that brace. It’s at quit an angle by the time you get it to there. It’s not slipping off.
Becky
well that’s cool. I’ve always had the issue of not wanting to deal with round bales in part because I don’t have a tractor.
Well, these are a lot cheaper then a tractor, and do the job just as well.
The only draw back is you can only move one at a time. We had to bring them about 20 miles.
Becky
Well, it’s real interesting!
I still don’t trust the quality of local round bales... they’re just bigger bales of the same crummy hay the horses don’t really eat. I see it becoming a huge pile of rotting hay in the pasture that they’d never finish. But if I could get the same quality as the squares, and if they weren’t rotten on the inside, then I can see the ease of them for feeding a herd.
Course I missed much of the best rearing and bucking... but I think you can see fun was had.
