This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
So sorry about your trainer. Good to see you checking in.
Thanks. Forgot to mention that he has been given a very, very good prognosis so we’re all thrilled.
Dog gone jobs anyways!
Heh, good luck on getting the kitties to use the box. I set up something similar for my barn kitties and they wouldn’t have anything to do with it. They prefer to sleep up on top of the hay where they can see everything around them and can get up in the rafters in the blink of an eye if they need to. I guess what looks cozy to us looks like a trap to a cat.
Well the hay isn’t out of reach of the dogs, it’s only stacked two high. I just wanted to provide something that was high up. Maybe just bedding on top of the cabinet would be as good, but not as warm. They’re currently sleeping under the porch I think, which means by day, they’re sortof captive there. The dogs still chase them off because they’re ‘invaders’, not part of the family yet, in their eye. I’ve been yellin’ at them if I see it.
Yeah, the blankets on top of the cabinet would probably work, maybe with some plastic bags under it. Mine seem to like to sleep on plastic bags. Maybe it traps the heat or something, I don’t know. But hopefully if you start feeding them out there instead of on the porch they’ll start to hang out there.
In other news, I had to take Hope to the vets this morning. The farrier was out yesterday evening to reshoe her and Ellie and he noticed that her left rear leg was swollen from the hock down. I hadn’t even noticed it and I’m sure it wasn’t like that Saturday when we rode, but it was nearly twice the size of the other one and had quite a bit of heat in it. Other than that, the only thing we could see wrong with it was a small cut on the front of the fetlock that was scabbed over and another small scabbed over cut on the inside of the cannon bone on up towards the hock, but nothing that you would think would cause all that swelling. The farrier thought that she poked something in it, but said as far as he could tell it wasn’t still in there. So off to the vet’s we went bright and early this morning to have it seen to. The vet agreed with the farrier about the puncture and that it wasn’t still in there. He said that the swelling was probably cellulitis caused by the infection and gave her a BIG dose of pennecillin and another shot of some kind of steroid to bring the swelling on down. Then he gave me some antibiotic in powder form to put on her feed for a week or so and some probiotics to give every other day to keep her stomach happy. He told me to cold hose it 10 or 15 minutes every day and if it wasn’t significantly better by Thursday to bring her back. But hopefully that won’t be neccessary. And since I was hauling anyways, I took Ellie and got her Coggins drawn and a rabies shot. Fun morning!
Yikes... I sure hope hitting it with all that will clear Ellie’s leg right up. Let us know how it looks after the antibiotics have had a chance to work.
Whoa...you are getting some rain...what are your temps?
Becky
Look at them. They're bone dry. They won't go out ;~) If they stay dry when ecurbh gets home to give me a hand I'm going to put their blankets on and see if they will spend a little time out and about that way.
This needs one of those kitty captions... More hay pleaze?
Well, it is raining here now really hard...
Becky
I don’t think it’s our rain that did that ;~)
Suppose to rain today, but I hope nothing like yours, Hair. I still am working on getting this garage sale ready. Sunny and real warm after today. I hope so.
Well DANG! Everybody’s getting rain but ME! We’re still in our same old drought pattern. October is normally our driest month anyways, but at least it’s not still 100*.
I got a nibble on my AgDirect ad on Goose yesterday. The guy sent me an e-mail after I left work yesterday and then left me a message on my answering machine at home. It was too late to call him by the time I got the message but I responded to his e-mail this morning. I sent him the latest picture I took and gave him my cell number in case he wants to call during the day. He lives an hour or two from here and wants to come see him, so it sounds promising. Hopefully he’ll be a nice person.
I hope he’s a nice person too :~)
Good morning - Sipping coffee here. I should have taken pictures last night of the spectacle of putting blankets on. I put pony’s on first, then Cyn, and pony was RIGHT in the middle of it, like she wanted to inspect every strap. This was pissing Cyn off, having the pony sniff her everywhere, so I kept trying to shoo pony away, I didn’t want to be between it. But then when I got her done and did Bay, both Cyn and the pony watched with fascination while I did his. It was the annual bringing out of the clean blankets, I guess. Always a crowd pleaser.
Bay’s straps all fit exactly as they were last year. Ahem... Cyn and pony both had to be let out.
Got any good stuff at the garage sale? You can take pictures of everything, see if there’s something we want to buy :~)
That’s funny about the blankets. Horses are so goofy about stuff sometimes.
All mine have put on a few pounds over the summer too, although I’ve got Bob and Hope on the Muzzle Diet and they’re looking pretty good right now. And Bob’s feet are looking MUCH better. No chips at all. He does have ridges in his hooves though, so something was definately going on with them a couple of months ago. But the farrier put the hoof testers on him all around and said that he was solid as a rock, so I was glad to hear that. I was going to have shoes put back on him at that point but the farrier said it’d be best to wait a little longer until the weather wasn’t so dry and his hooves had more moisture in them so I went with that. He was afraid that as dry as his feet were that they’d start to split when he started driving the nails. I’ve got enough horses to ride right now anyways, plus I had plans to pull everybody’s shoes in late November and leave them off until January, so that’ll work out just fine.
All those little items add up! Good luck with the sale.
Don’t need no baby and kid stuff ;~)
Good morning everyone:)
I slept in this morning...till almost 8:00, haven’t done that in forever. Sitting down at the building is harder then being home mowing. But only 4 more day’s.
We had a lot of rain last night, and it is cloudy this morning, but temps are still in the 80”s yeah:)!!!
Good luck with the Garage sale. I keep thinking I’d like to have one down at our building.
Good luck with the man coming to look at Goose. Isn’t Hope the one you said you were bringing here?
Becky
