FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

I set up the kitty crate out on the table where I've been feeding the cats. If I can get that kitten eating in there I might be able to sit in that chair and close the door.

Regardless, Pippin thinks it's a pretty cool spot ;~)

Last time we went to the vet at a year old both kittens fit in there pretty easily. I think it'll be crowded at best, next time ;~)

I was wondering if you had taken any videos of her. She really can move out. It was funny hearing the branches whacking you in the face. :)

Thanks for the links, I enjoyed them.

That’s a lotta cat in that crate! You’re either gonna have to get a second one or a bigger one the next time you take them to the vets. I just went ahead and got a bigger one so all three of mine fit in there, but then there’s nearly 50 pounds of cat in there and you can barely pick it up.

He’s turning into a big ole tom cat now. Maybe he has to grow into the void left by Cartman. ;~)

The only thing about trapping that kitty in there is that she ain’t gonna be happy when it happens and then you’ve eventually got to let her out coz that crate’s not big enough for her and a litter box too and she’s probably gonna head for the hills when you do and be pissed at you for a long time. I say be patient. She’ll warm up to you, especially since you’re feeding her. The only time I’ll trap a cat is if I’m planning on taking it to the pound and never seeing it again. They have long memories.

I know... there’s a risk. I may let her eat of the crate a few nights so she’s used to that before I close her in. I just want to catch her before something bad happens to her. Coyote, dog, (even my own keep wanting to run her off), disease, car. I fear she’s one of the two kittens that started coming around, and something’s already happened to the other one. I haven’t seen it in a few nights now. My memory is of that little yellow kitty who was dying when we found her, too young to be having kittens and too small. Remember that? That was so sad.

My plan would be to put her in the back bedroom with a litter box and food and keep her back there till I could handle her. I’d guess she’s a long kitten... 3-4 months? Unless she’s just ~really scrawny~. If she gets older, I think she’ll stay feral and be harder to handle.

They do get big. Ol’ Buster probably weighs nearly 20 pounds now and feels like a brick, but when I got him a couple of years ago he was just a scrawney little bugger who kept crashing my in-law’s 50th wedding anniversary party. We’d pitch him out and the next time the door was open, he came right back in again like he owned the place. And he’d mingle around amongst all those people, trying to charm a tasty morsel out of somebody like it was the most natural thing in the world. The party was at the church reception hall and several people said he’d been there for a while and the church ladies had been feeding him but nobody claimed him. I pitched him in my Jeep with a chicken plate just to keep him occupied until the party was over but, like I said earlier, he was a charming devil and ended up coming home with us. He had obviously been somebody’s house cat because he took to domestic life like a fish to water. With the notable exception of whizzing under the Christmas tree that first year, he’s been the perfect housemate and he’s been a part of our family ever since. That was right after we had to have my old cat Teddy put down because of cancer. I guess Buster was God’s gift to me to help heal the pain of losing Teddy, whether I knew it at the time or not.

Yeah, I remember that poor little thing. That was pitiful. So I don't blame you for wanting to help this one. Just don't let her get a hold of you. I'm afraid that it'll be like having a tiger by the tail when you get her in the house and turn her loose. She's liable to shread the curtains and blinds and anything else that she thinks stands between her and "out of there". It could get interesting!

I’d expect she may hide under the bed for several days any way. I think she’s just real timid and young. The encouraging thing about all these feral cats around is I haven’t heard any fights. I’ve seen my kittens mingle with them.

I was going to take it over to show it to my 82-year-old mother at her assisted living, but it’d take me and two nurses to pitch her up in there to go for a ride! ;o)

You could use a spring board. My trainer has a truck like that. I have to use the handle in the ceiling to haul myself in. I can't get in otherwise.

...how much is a ten yard load of gravel in your parts?...

All of you are going to thing that I'm either really obnoxious or immature or both, but with the italics I read that (more than once) as "How much is a ten yard load of gravel in your pants?" And was very: ?!?!?!

Those are great vids, Frog! You made me nervous going down that rocky trail, though! You’re brave to video and ride down that at the same time.

Well that’s good. You don’t want to have to deal with WWIII. I’m sure the senior household cats will smack her around a good bit at first, just because they can, but they’ll probably settle down after a couple of weeks. That’s how long it took for Pearl and Buster to warm up to Bear when I first brought him home from Cav’s house. He didn’t come out from under the bed for most of that time either except to eat, and that was after everybody else had gone to bed. But at least he was already house broken. Some cat’s just don’t ever take to using a litter box. My BIL has one like that. She’ll nag you to death to go outside to do her business but she will NOT use a litter box. She’ll lay in it or play in it but that’s it.

Well, we did get her in there though, and we did it just like you said, by letting her haul herself up by the handle in the ceiling. She did get a boost in the butt by one of the nurses though. The hard part was getting her back out. It’s quite a drop from those seats to the ground!
