FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Are these the same ladies who were looking at Dusty before or new ones?

I would love to have an Indian shuffler, but with all the inbreeding, they are so rare now.

Yes, these are the ladies that looked at her before the handicapped lady bought her. By the way, she inherited a running walk from her dam - is that the Indian shuffle?

I’m not sure why our hay has gone up soooo much. We should have had fine hay weather in Eastern WA this summer. The hay looks great and there should be plenty of it. Gas prices probably. It does all have to come over the pass.

It might be a combination of gas prices and hay going out of state. We have a lot of hay going west this year and we didn’t have an excessive amount as it was. Everyone is trying to get enough for a year for fear there won’t be any come winter.

is that the Indian shuffle?

It is a pace of sorts. Very much like the Paso gait, which would go back to the Spanish horses, that were brought over here. A lot of foundation breeders will get horses that have the gait. The show horse world discourages it, because they do not trot.

I think I haven’t ever seen an Indian shuffle then. Dusty has the walk, trot, canter and then a walk that is as fast as a trot. I’ve watched it when she’s out in the pasture and it is simply a running walk.

Horses checking out the new hay racks...

We wondered how long it would take for the pony to just flip the hay out of it, as she likes to do. It took about 30 seconds... Hay in mid-flight:

I R A BAAAAAD PONY.

I'm going to devise some kind of lid that flips over and keeps the hay in it ;~)

LOL - she looks like some sort of demon possessed thing with that red eye.

It looks great though and not only will it cut waste but it will be more in their stomachs and less blown, thrown, whatever. Well - maybe some wire over the top that attachs with clips?

Hello, we got back earlier this evening. Dead tired, and sore from climbing in and out of the boat. But I did catch 50 fish...some of them would have been keepers too, if we had been keeping:), crappie.

Hair your barn and the walk you dug out, looks great, so does that hay! Is it this years hay?

MT, sounds like you had a good time.

Becky

Well, sore and a lot of fish caught, sounds like fun was had! But you have to throw them all back?

That’s this year’s hay... and it is great orchard grass hay. At least if we’re going to pay top dollar it’s good stuff. It sure beats the local stuff that’s all brown weeds.

A few pictures then I'm off to bed:)

Our camp.

Mack coming down to the lake.

Pelicans are starting to come thru.

Night time in camp.

Looking across the lake at night.

We didn’t have to throw them back, no one wanted to clean them:), and I didn’t want to cook them. It was just for fun.

Sounds like you had a great time. That’s a beautiful view of the lake. One worth framing.

Ah - pretty lake at sunset! And I wouldn’t have guessed you’d have pelicans. I thought they were a salt-water bird.

Not sure I understand fishing if you don’t want fish ;~)

Have a good night’s sleep!

Thanks for the pictures! ~waves to Mack~

We don't really "have" pelicans here, they just migrate thru. When my mom was alive and her and Dad lived on Grand Lake it was always a big deal to the people who lived on the lake all year when the pelicans arrived:). There would be just a few days when the lake would be so crowded with them that you couldn't see the lake, then they'd be gone again.

Pelicans mate for life. One year a pair lived on the shore line in front of my mom and dads and their neighbors place. The female couldn't fly...injured some how I guess. But the male stayed with her. Every one put out food for them. She did eventually die, and dad says that for some time the male flew around calling:( , then left finally.

ot sure I understand fishing if you don’t want fish ;~)

Catching them is fun. LOL...what's not to understand?

That’s interesting that they migrate through that far inland... from the great lakes to somewhere south of the border maybe?

Such a sad story about the pelican pair. Hard world for the little things. I hope he found someone else to be with. Poor guy.

Sounds like you had a great weekend! That looks like a really nice campground. I’m glad you found people to ride with, even if you had to ditch a few of them. Sorry to hear about Alison’s wrist. That’s gonna put a crimp in her style for a while.

Good Morning.

Great pictures Becky! These weekend trips can sure wear you out. The sunset is beautiful.

Hair, the barn looks good. Lots of work for you guys.

It is a pretty day here again. Rain moving in tomorrow afternoon. Then I am afraid it will get a lot cooler. One of the girls I rode with on Saturday sent me an email. They rode another 4 1/2 hours on Sunday. She said the pace was a lot slower. She rides a QH and we are going to stay in touch and go riding again sometime. Her family doesn't ride, so it will be nice to have a riding buddy.

Looks like you’ve got the barn all ship-shape for winter now. Having those hay racks inside will really be handy. Hopefully you can figure out a way to keep them from flipping it out on the floor. Cyn looked like she was wanting to help ecurbh really bad. Was that Pony who looked like she was trying to reach through and get the drill?

Looks like y’all had a gorgeous weekend to camp. I love that picture of the lake at sunset. The pelicans are cool too. The only time I’ve ever seen them is when we go down to the Gulf.
