FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Look at all that snow!!!! Goodness, I feel for you. It’s suppose to be 70 here today. But very cloudy and dreary. Tomorrow another cold front is suppose to move thru which could kick up some severe weather.

The kids and I had a nice Christmas on Christmas eve. Yesterday I went up to see my dad but had to come home early, as Jenny had to take Travis to the hospital with chest pains. So far everything is coming back fine, but he’s still there having some tests run. He will get out today if everything continues to look good.

The kids got me a desk chair that rolls and swivels...I really like it, makes sitting at my desk much better. Before I just had a plastic lawn chair. Now I’m getting ready to start taking down some of the decorations.

Aw geeze... I hope Travis is OK, and that you don't have any severe weather. I wouldn't know what 70 feels like in December. :~)

We had a lot of meltoff yesterday... the trees unloaded, so that's good. We're getting a warm rain system later today and I worried about them (like I always do) if we get rain on top of what was there, they're holding about as much as they can take!

But now we're OK. Bring it on! It'll be a slushy mess to walk in, but we'll get through that.

Horses are bored though... Cyn has taken to chewing on posts and trees.... Bay's lounging in the barn this morning...

Well hey there! I’d just about given up on ever seeing anyone on this thread again, so I’m glad to see y’all back.

Hair, I’m glad to hear the snow is loosening it’s grip, at least on the trees. I’ll bet it’s been a real trial!

Becky, I’m glad you had a good Christmas with the kids. I hope Travis is ok. Chest pains in someone that young, or at any age for that matter, are really scary. I hope you didn’t get any bad weather. We’re supposed to get some really nasty storms sometime after midnight tonight, and I hate stormy weather at night. The weather’s been really crazy around here lately, with 15* temps on Monday and now 70+ yesterday and today.

Cindy, your new puppy sounds like fun! I’m looking forward to seeing the pics of him!

And Duchess, how’s things going out your way? Are Bob and all your horses ok? Are you still selling some or are you pretty much down to the ones you’re going to keep?

I actually went riding today for the first time since before Thanksgiving, in short sleeves no less! It had been raining and cloudy pretty much every other day from then until now and it was getting really old. I don’t cope very well to a lack of sunshine! :-p

HaveFaith didn’t get to go. She’s gone to S. Alabama to see her Mama but should be back tomorrow. And BladeRider has had her kids over for the holidays, then her older brother and his kids came down for a few days so she was hanging close to home too. That left me and my old riding buddy Shirley. We just took a short half day ride out of the horse camp but it was really nice. When we got there, there weren’t that many other people there, but on the way back from the break area we met more riders coming down the trail than we’d seen in a long time. I guess everybody else had cabin fever too, but just waited a little later to get out. We plan on riding again on Wednesday too since several of us are off work. I just hope the weather holds!

It’s good to hear from you. Glad you and Shirley had a good ride.

Everything here is okay, just cold and snow. And computer problems.

Still have five horses left for sale - Sonny, Friday, Slick, Lace and CJ. I’m not a good salesman, I keep warning off any beginning riders or new to horses people :)

Had a great Christmas present though, cards from the people who bought Red (he’s sixteen hands, so smart and they love him); the people who bought Sam (he loves the boys, the boys love him, he’s into everything and so smart); the girl who bought Ghost (he’s ready for 4th level dressage, she’s hoping she passes, she loves him) and the girl who bought BamBam (put shoes on her, been out on trail rides, getting along great). That was all really great to hear.

Hope to be on line more frequently here soon. Take care.

Wow, that’s great news from all the folks who bought your babies! It’s good to know they have such nice homes and people taking care of them.

I haven’t heard anything recently from the girl who bought Ellie last December, but last I heard she was really enjoying her. The people who bought Goose in November are really tickled with him and just love him to death. I think they just about have to draw straws to see who’s going to get to ride him every time they go out. So that leaves me with Bob, Hope, Grace and Whirl that I ride, and Tennessee, Truely and Bluebell who are basically retired. At this point I really don’t care if I sell any more of them or not. I guess I’d sell Hope if the right person came along, but I’m not actively trying. I may just breed her at some point because I think she’d have really pretty babies, but that’s not going to happen until I get a house and barn built on our property. She’ll just be 5 next year so I’ve got plenty of time yet.

Thanks Frog:) I’ve missed reading everyone’s posts here too. LOL...it’s hard to change at our age:)

Our weather has been crazy here too. Today and tomorrow we have high 60’s then another cold front, altho not too bad. Suppose to stay above freezing anyway during the day.

I just wanted everyone who contributed to the gift you sent me when Larry passed away to know that I spent it today:)

I ordered blinds for the windows down here at the office where I plan on living. Blinds was the first thing I needed before I could move here, and I’m ready to move rather the apartment is ready for me or not. The blinds I ordered are going to be just beautiful, IMO:). I didn’t know that you could get fabric vertical blinds, but you can. They seem so much warmer and homier then the vinyl ones. It will be two weeks before they are here but as soon as they get here I will take pictures to share with you all.

Once again, the gift was very much appreciated. Larry would have been honored to know that so many thought enough of him to do that for me. Thanks again.

Becky

That sounds wonderful. I didn’t know you could get fabric ones either. I’m looking forward to seeing a picture of them. Yep, definately need blinds before you can move in :)

Hello everyone!

Becky, enjoy those blinds! They sound nice.

How has everyone been? I've been busy, which is why I haven't been on, but clearly I need to change that! I've missed everyone. Christmas was great, and now I'm gearing up for the new year. The Fellow has been home for a couple of weeks, and it has been good to have him around. He leaves on Sunday, and I'm already missing him. I'll be flying back and forth to Chicago to see him until he graduates, and hopefully we'll settle someplace once he does. It will probably be somewhere in MA or North Carolina.

Other than travels, nothing much has changed. Still have the same job, I finished up a business class this semester that was a lot of fun, and I'm trying to plan for a trip to Poland in March, if finances hold out. (I've never been outside of the country if you don't count Canada)

I've been trying to get out to ride when I can. I go to my trainer's and hack around and trail ride. With some of my health problems, I've been wiped out, and I've really taken it easy with the ponies, but I'm starting to feel better. I had my first lesson in a loong time last week, and it was good for me, but I felt it later!

I hope that everyone has a very merry new year!

Well hey there stranger! Glad to hear that Santa Claus was good to you and that you and your beau are doing well. Also glad to hear that you’re feeling better. I was real worried about you there for a while. Getting back on the ponies will be good for your mental health too. If I go too long without riding I begin to get pretty cranky.

That’s exciting about the blinds! Every little thing gets you one step closer to where you want to be. I look forward to seeing the pics of them. I’ll bet they’ll be gorgeous.

How are things with you guys? We’re getting hammered with snow(again!). Another 6 inches. We got slammed two weekends ago with more than a foot- it snowed for three days. I had to go to Boston to pick up the Fellow and it took 4 hours total. It was awful. I’m hoping that the weather is nice this weekend so that I can put him up on a horse. We’ve been trying to do it every time that he is out here, but have failed for one reason or another.

I forgot to tell everyone:

A couple of weeks ago, our barn took a trip to a private fancy pants warmblood farm, where this woman and her daughter have BEAUTIFUL horses. Most of their horses were young stock, mostly colts and fillies. but you could tell that they were going to grow up to be lovely movers. Lots of style and class. She wants to start a quadrille group, and we'll get to ride her horses. If everything pans out, it'll be quite the opportunity!

Well, take pictures if you get him on a horse... heck... even not on a horse we’d like pictures!

Our weather is currently: melting and wet. We had some chance of high winds last night but it was not bad. We’ll see, there’s a few more systems off the coast. We’re just longing for spring :~)

Spring weather would be lovely. We’re in the teens right now but on Sunday we had sixty degree weather. Go figure. The Fellow wants to go on a trail ride. I don’t feel right taking him on one because he’s never been on a horse before and these aren’t straight and level trails. We sometimes have to bushwhack it a la “Man From Snowy River”, and I’m afraid of him falling off. The last time that I was out, I almost got knocked off of my horse from a fallen tree branch. The lead horse went cantering down the hill and my horse felt it was necessary to hurry up and follow. However, I’m not worried about the horse being unsafe, I’m worried about him being unsafe because of balance and being able to control the horse. I worry about him getting left behind if his horse decided to get fast going up or down a hill- and we have some pretty steep hills. We know how to anticipate what a horse is going to do, so we can be ready, but maybe I just worry too much. He thinks that he’ll be fine, but you know men and their egos! :-)
