FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Long time no talk indeed! Horses all look great. Can’t splurge a little and take Tuffy to the show? Where is it?

I believe the World is in Fort Worth Texas - long way to go with the price of diesel and hotels. It’s a week long. Although, you never know, I might win the lottery before the end of October :)

Tuffy qualified for the World. Wish we had the money and time to go.

Congrats! You should go. My friend Judy, invited me to go with them to the World Show. It might be fun and I have never been to Texas. They are taking their weanling filly.

Rocky looks good. Where in PA is he going?

My tomatoes were a failure this year. Only ate a few. It just was too hot and too much rain, I guess. It would have been nice to freeze some for winter.

...it's already fall here, leaves are all changing...

What leaves? ;o)

Rocky's gorgeous as always, but he IS looking a little portly. The grass hay will do him good.

CJ's looking good too, on her stroll out with her Dad. You've got some good ones coming along there!

And Tuffy qualifying for the World is GREAT! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that you'll be able to find a way to go. Seems like that would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Rocky is going to Effort, PA. Not sure where that is though.

Well, there’s a month before the World, never know what might happen between now and then.

After 15yrs, I’m still tryng to figure out how to get a good tomato crop here :) This hanging them in the garage seems to work pretty well.

LOL - well we do have some leaves. Unbelievable how one day it’s summer and the next it’s winter coming. Looks like we’ll have a long cold one here.

I’ve got to get new pictures of Lace for you all. I didn’t realize how fat she was until she started getting ridden regularly. She’s a completely different horse, looks like a thoroughbred now instead of a stock horse. All of our horses are too fat.

I’d love to go to the World and it would be a fun drive but it would take a major miracle to pull that off :)

And speaking of hay, I finally got some. Earlier in the year I was having to wait because I wanted pure Bermuda, with no weeds or other grass in it, so the first few cuttings weren’t what I wanted. Then we hit a dry spell and it just didn’t grow. Then when the hay field finally got right the guy cutting it was having to wait because there kept on being a chance of rain every 2 or 3 days and he needed a good 5 day stretch of clear dry weather for it to cure properly. So we finally hit it just right last week. He cut it on Monday and rolled it on Thursday, then he baled a few hundred square bales, mostly for friends and family, on Friday.

I ended up borrowing a larger trailer than I had last year so I was able to haul 12 rolls at a time instead of the 9 that I could haul before. I went ahead and got 2 loads, even though I didn’t really need that many. It was really good looking hay, and just in case the drought continues and hay is scarce again next year it couldn’t hurt to have a little extra in the barn.

My FIL helped me get it unloaded with the tractor on Friday afternoon so I could return the borrowed trailer. He got half of it put in the barn, but he’s not as stong as he used to be and the clutch on that tractor is real stiff and it just wore him out, so we just left the rest of it out in the pasture, figuring we’d finish putting it up the next day, but it unexpectedly rained on it that night so we waited until yesterday morning for it to dry back out then put it in the barn. It doesn’t really hurt rolled hay to get rained on a little bit. They’re rolled pretty tight so they shed water pretty well, and as long as they aren’t touching each other while they’re wet they’re fine.

The square bales were fine though. It was late by the time I got them home so I just pulled the whole trailer in the barn isle Friday night and Hubby helped me unload and stack it yesterday after lunch. So I’m glad that’s taken care of. One less thing to worry about!

Most of mine are too fat too, even with a skimpy pasture and very little feed, hence the grazing muzzles. Bob and Hope look pretty good because they get ridden regularly, but little Miss Whirl is a butterball. She’s got the added disadvantage of being short and stocky too so it shows up even worse on her. She’s not in a muzzle yet, but she’s headed that way. Poor kid!

Just by way of reminding everyone that I have horses too (you'd hardly know that this summer) I shot a little video this morning of the horses goofing off. Who knows what this was all about, but it seems everyone is feeling good, including Bay and my bad pony.

Here's a snapshot...

Frog, I know you prolly can't watch the video at work, maybe you can catch it at home.

I see from the picture that Pony is doing her Airs Above The Ground. I guess the hint of Fall in the air has them feeling frisky. She’s such a silly pony!

Well, it's certainly not the pressures of the job gettin' to her. ;~)

Boy that Pony sure is full of pi$$ and vinegar! Just snaking that neck to beat the band. And Bay with that big ol’ snort of his, he was convinced there were horse-eating monsters out there. So funny!

Did you ever turn the regular power back on to the barn or are you still running off of extension cords?

We’re still running on an extension cord. It works, so we’ve never gone back.

Well, I can understand that, since it’s not your place and you don’t wanna put a lot of time and money into searching down the problem. I’m still running off of about 300’ of extension cords at my barn too. Sometimes I’m running 6 florescent shop lights, a high-speed fan and an angle grinder, all at the same time. I’m sure there’s quite a voltage drop when all that’s running, and that’s not good for the equipment, but I’ve got no other choice. You have to make do when it’s not your own place.
