FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Oh, yes we rode. Or shall I say we raced around KC’s. Gary and Mar. were packing up to leave so we were gonna go by ourselves. Randy C’s group were abt. to leave and he said we could ride with them. I said we prob. couldn’t keep up. while we were riding by. We got behind 4 gaited horses, but the one in the back had been out on the trail 2 times and today was the 2ond. After she had to get off and lead him down a worn out rocky trail we came to a fork, so we took the other one. It led us straight to Randy’s group and he said just to come on and they’d take it easy. HA! I had Faith’s short shanked bit on Daisy (mistake) because I was too lazy to unbuckle hers from the show bridle. Randy tightened her chin chain once, but I didn’t have much brakes. You know Daisy, she was gonna keep up or bust, so I fought to keep her from cantering all day. Or shall I say 3 1/4 hrs. We probably hit almost every trail there and took us 1/2 as long as usual. I got behind Blade as much as I could because he is careful going down the rocky hills. The other thing was that she was in heat and RC was on Charlie the stud. He knew it, too, because he looked like he had 5 legs most of the day and she was trying her best to get to him. It was fun and I’m glad I got to ride and see Carolyn, but RELAXING it was NOT.

Mina really is a pretty girl but she’s going to waste here with me.

I don’t see how anybody can make a living in the horse business. The place my husband bought pays for itself, that’s about it. It could never take the place of my husbands job. I have thought about doing something fun out there, maybe a clinic or a show or even a horse and tack swap and sale. I’ve been making a little of my own money on ebay and now I’ve got the itch. I haven’t earned my own money in 20 years.

LOL - I’m here to say you can’t make a living in the horse business unless you’re a big name trainer who doesn’t own your own horses.

You know, I sold Dusty Rose to a handicapped lady last year, daughter of my mare. Anyway, a could do anything horse with tons of potential, lessons, show, barrels - you asked her she would do it. She’s happy as can be now being a pasture pet - hasn’t been ridden since she left here. Just gets petted and spoiled every day by a lady in a wheelchair and they both love it. Anyway, Mina might be perfectly content to be a pasture ornament you can look at :)

Well, I'm jealous of your situation! I'd like to think I can make money in that business down the road... But I don't think it can make much if you are paying salaries to other people to run it. You'd have to want to be the barn manager and do a LOT of the daily work yourself.

...Soldier trapped her in a corner and whaled the tar out of her left side...

Grrrrrr!! Kari, that horse has got to go! He's way more trouble than he's worth, and he's going to hurt somebody one of these days.

I'm glad to hear that Hal's finally taking those other two back to the sale. You just didn't have time to mess with them. You'll probably take a loss on them, but after a couple of months of not having to feed them you'll make up the difference.

ROTFLMAO!! I'll bet Randy was livid too. He generally doesn't let his studs get by with that so I'll bet poor ol' Charlie was getting whacked every time he did it.

Are the trail down there still in as bad a shape as they were?

The trainer showing Judy's stud in the photos, made $500 just showing in halter on Saturday. Just think what they get at a really big show.

Well, I have officially arrived at that point where “it has to get worse before it can get better”. We have gone from closets and back rooms that are full of frap, to piles and boxes of frap stacked everywhere until the yard sale.

I can’t wait till Saturday. We have enough to have a really good sale, I think. But it can’t happen soon enough for me!

Ugh! I feel for ya! I hate having stuff stacked all around like that. Hopefully you’ll get a lot of buyers. You should get some good walk-up traffic, having that little store nearby. Pricing it is the hard part to me.

I think our location is excellent, and we’ve made up a lot of signs. I’ll also do an ad on craigslist, I think, with pictures of some of the more attractive items.

Pricing is tough. Especially on some of the collectable stuff we have. I have decided to sell some of the really fine crystal and silver things that were my AZ grandpa’s. Most probably won’t sell for much, but in doing some checking on the internet, the silver tea service is pre 1900 and probably quite valuable. Might be $500, might be $5000, and not knowing which is closer, we decided not to sell it, and left it with dad, who says he’ll have it appraised. I don’t mind giving someone a good deal on it, but I don’t want to sell it for a stupid price, which $5 or even $50 seems like it might have been. We may run it on ebay later, unless we find a antique or jewelry store who wants to consign it or buy it.

But the crystal dessert set, we think we can put a decent fair price on it and move it. I’ve just had it stored for years, and will NEVER have the lifestyle that will want to display or use silver and crystal at a dinner party, you know what I mean?

You’re right, if we had no children we could probably make a go of it but we have 5 kids, one in college and one going to college next year, then another one right behind that. It’s an unbelievable expense, I’m tellin’ ya. I didn’t go to college so I had no idea. It’s nuts.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don’t really have any use for that kind of thing either. It’s just something else to collect dust. Selling the better stuff on ebay sounds like a good idea to me. It’d definitely bring more there than at a yard sale. I need to do that with a lot of stuff from my Mom’s place. Just gotta take the time to do it.

Well, good luck. Hope you have lots of buyers:).

I’m not looking forward to when we have to do that.

I guess so:) Good days and bad days.

All the kids and I are going on a camping trip this weekend. I’m looking forward to that. We started up the RV yesterday, and it’s plugged in, so the fridge can get cold. I’ve got to clean it up a bit. It’s been sitting since last Oct. when we used it when all the ladies came here, so it’s pretty dusty on the inside.

Yeah, this time last year we were getting all geared up to head out your way. That sure was fun. I wish we were doing it again this year!

I just got home from my doctor visit and he released me and gave me the go-ahead to start riding again. WOO HOO!! I won't know how to act, it's been so long! I know one thing though, I'll be picking the bugs outta me teeth coz I won't be able to quit grinning.

A really fine late summer day here in the inland Empire. Miss Dandie is getting real close to her first backing, and this was a really good training day for her. We'll be riding her before the snow flies.
