This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Thank you. Yes, he was great, acted like a real pro, squared up and ears forward like he knew he could ace it. Then later Janelle was riding him around - not in the arena, and he stood and let her visit like a twenty year old gelding. I’d say he made an impression today :) Aged stallions were acting like fools and he was calm and collected.
This is Judy's 3 yo gelding. The girl riding him, has been working him for a few months at home. First show for this boy and he didnt do too bad. Looked around at lot and yelled for his buddy. The show went pretty fast and I missed Amy showing the other gelding in halter. Judy almost didn't get him there in time.
Congratulations to Allison again :)
That’s a nice looking gelding that Judy has.
Wow, that’s great about Tuffy doing so well in the show! He looks great, and behaving that well, he sounds like he’s got a great mind too. Brains AND good looks. You don’t get that too often in a male of any species! ;o)
Looks like the kitties have made great progress since I saw them last. Good Job!
That’s a cute picture of Alison. You can just hear that little girl in the foreground thinking “Gee, I wish I was her!”
Isn’t that the truth. I attribute it to his mother :) Farah raises some good colts.
She is terribly overweight and is only 5 years old!
He was a lot prettier, before he roaned out so much. The girl riding him has not showed in 11 years. She was a little nervous, but did well considering the horse was green. The classes were small, so it was a great schooling show for him and her.
Well, I think the remnants of hurricane Faye are finally getting rid of the drought we’ve had for the last 3 years. We’ve really been getting a good soaking the last coiuple of days. It was coming down at a rate of 4 inches an hour last night. Nothing severe, just a good steady rain. The cats wanted to go out and were not amused that I wouldn’t make it stop.
I had the farrier scheduled to come out this afternoon but I went ahead and called him last night and rescheduled to Thursday. He shoes in the barn, so the rain itself isn’t the problem, it’s the fact that when it gets real wet it trips out the GFCI plug for the extension cords that bring the power to the barn and it’s kinda hard to shoe in the dark. One of these days I’m gonna have a decent barn! ;o)
So how’s things on the kitten-taming front? Any more progress with Brother?
Yesterday I let the kittens out of the cage to run around - twice, and managed to get them back in the cage so that’s progress.
In the cage, I can handle them easily, out of the cage, they go native quickly. But it’s good progress! They were better off for getting to run around and get some exercise.
We’ll probably take them in to the vets on Thurs or Fri - I need to call and see about that today.
So are you going to have all 3 of them neutered then or what?
Well, we were planning on just these two new ferals... Wicket was going to go to our regular vet first of the month... but now that you ask the question, there’s no reason not to take all three of them to the cheaper place, really, except for treating Wicket differently because she’s a pet, and forming a record and history with our vet with her.
Hmm.... I dunno. I think these two might come around in time to being better cats, but I’m still not sure they’ll make real good pets. I suspect they’ll end up turned loose here in the barn unless I get another idea.
I think turned loose in the barn is a great idea.
Well, you can always have Wicket spayed at the cheap place and then take her to your regular vet later for her shots and examination to get her record started with him then. And I think just turning them back out at your place afterwards is a good idea. Between them and their mamas, you shouldn’t have a mouse problem!
Well, we’ll think on it and see. Probably end up taking Wicket to our regular vet, they’re a much gentler touch for a pet cat that can do it that way. The cheap place will only take them in live traps so they can give the injections through the trap and not handle them at all. They’re set up for ferals, and Wicket doesn’t need to be handled that way.
The rush, curiously enough, is to get the male fixed. He’s doing a lot of dominant mating kinds of behaviors, though I don’t think he knows what to do yet, and the sister isn’t really interested, he bites her on the back of the neck and just lays on her. Hormones may be driving a lot of his behaviors, including the yowling at the other cats in the house.
I don’t know how I’d give them to someone else somewhere else and have them stick around. At least here is familiar, they’ll know where the food is because they were raised going there.
Oh, I didn’t know that the cheap place handled them all the same way, regardless of if they were tame or not, so I don’t blame you for not wanting to take Wicket there.
But it sounds like the sooner you get Brother fixed, the better. He may not have any idea what goes where right now, but if he happens to hit it by accident then all bets are off. Hopefully you’ve caught him early enough that the male hormones will fade and his tomcat-like behavior will go along with it.
Oh, and about giving them to someone else and worrying about them hanging around. They’d need to keep them in a crate in the barn where they wanted them to stay for at least a couple of weeks, at least until they got comfortable with the sights and smells of the place and the general feeding routine and all that. Then they’d probably stay.
It’s a different kind of clinic... I don’t think they do any routine ‘office visits’ at all, where we could be there, just drop off.
