FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

I did just a little, and he didn’t fight back at it, but he retreated to the litterbox to hide. I’ll do it again in a little bit, letting him settle in a little more.

The Porter story is Too Funny. I’m glad they let her go. We try to let our ducks raise and we just feed the “varmits” so I’m not buying any more females.

My brother likes duck hunting more than any other kind. He doesn’t have a dog, though. He would like practicing with one of those zingers.

The spaying can disrupt milk production and/or nursing (I had a cat that had an emergency C and I had the vet go ahead and spay her because she had a small pelvis. It did cause some problems for her nursing the kittens.) But obviously you did right to try to save the kitties.

Six is a lot for one small mama cat! Were you able to save the others?

He would enjoy his duck hunting so much more with a well trained retriever! It’s so nice just to sit there in the boat or the blind and send them out to do the cold, wet work!

I know you are both right, it’s just sad. Is the other momma cat still hanging around - her sister?

I bet some of his hunting buddies have dogs. He’s just too grumpy to take care of on all the time and doesnt’ want to get attached. We had a lab when I was at home and after I left he and my daddy would ‘coon hunt with him in the S Ala. swamps. He went in the water out of a boat when they shot one out of a tree once and it wasn’t dead. It attacked him and bit his nose. He would never go in after one again!

I'm sorry! I thought you knew the whole storey!

Yes, three got good homes from the Horse forum.

A calico, a tortie, and a little tux cat.

These are them, then.

Barkley killed one... that's how I found them, from that ruckus. They were in amongst a pile of old boards that were stacked behind the barn.

When we started pulling the pile apart, board by board, we were able to grab the three above, but two ran off and disappeared in the bushes.

I knew mom was watching us, and hoped she'd find these two kittens, but a month went by before we saw evidence of them again so my hopes had not been high.

Y'know, nobody said Labs were STUPID (ok, I didn't, anyway).

A raccoon is a lot for even a big Lab to handle, especially in the water. They've been known to drown dogs.

I have one cagey Lab matron of 7 1/2 who knows ducks and ponds and moving water very well, and one enthusiastic little silly of 2 who only knows that she is crazy about anything with feathers and wants to get better acquainted . . . .

Cute babies! They still have the blue kitten eyes!

I probably read about the story at the time but just forgot. . . . sorry!

Yes, the other momma was spayed too and is around every night and doing okay. Hopefully, they’ll go back to hanging out together. Before they each had kittens, they were together all the time, I’d see them come in at night together, and they’d both sleep up in that dogloo together. Since they had kittens, they split up. I’d like to think they’ll go back like they were as old spinsters, but I don’t know. It’d be nice to think they at least had each other.

I wondered what those were! They really do look like a mini version of the vehicle-mounted Multi-Rocket Launch Systems that the military uses. Pretty cool! It’s nice to know they just use them for bumbers though. I can see that being pretty rough on a quail or chuckar! You’d wind up with pâté. ;o)

Funny cat story:

I was bathing kittens the other nite and one was hollering. Mama, who had been in the tub feeding them all day off & on, heard his cries & came running to his rescue. She bounded into the tub with one leap, only to find herself belly deep in water. She had this “OH,S#!T!” Look on her face and I couldn't help but laugh. She tried to jump out, but every time she moved her legs just spread out on the bottom of the slick tub till she was doing 4 way splits. She just had to stand there till I got through and got her out. She didn't try it anymore. Stayed busy licking herself and other kittens dry.

Good, maybe they will get back together. My feral mom still hangs out with her three offspring, usually sunning on my front porch :)

You’d have to protect the quail with a sabot or something, or you WOULD have quail pate’! What a thought - gunpowder flavored quail pate’. I don’t think it’s gonna catch on. As my dad says, “Even the dogs won’t touch it.”

Momma cats are fierce defenders aren’t they. My feral momma when her two youngest were babies jumped on the head of one of my queensland healers and he was just walking around the corner of the house with me. Scared the daylights out of him.

Didn’t I tell you guys? We caught a tom last night! I know I kicked myself for not taking a picture of him, but he was straining so hard against the cage I didn’t want to hold him longer than necessary. Second time I’ve ever seen him, the first time was last week. Not sure if he’s resident now or just passing through. Big Black tom cat. A little battle worn, but looked healthy and well fed. So we turned him loose. I know we should have him neutered too, but I need to focus on these kittens for now, money wise, the kittens and the females I know are resident are my priority.

LOL! I bet that was one surprised mama cat!

Siamese LOVE water, they will play in it or actually swim in it. I used to have one Siamese female who loved a hot bath -- I would be drawing a bath and turn around from grabbing towels or shampoo or something and find her paddling up and down in the tub, happy as a lark. If you didn't want a bath full of cat hair, you had to shut her out of the bathroom, but then she'd stand outside the door and howl -- and a Siamese can do some pretty impressive howling!

Sometimes she would be satisfied if I ran a trickle of water in the sink for her to play with . . . .

My father had a Siamese Lilac Point female that would jump into the swimming pool on command. He won a lot of bets at parties!

You can’t possibly be sure you’ve neutered all the toms — and it only takes one to impregnate the entire neighborhood!
