FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Mom and Orange brother were not gullible enough to go for the trap last night. I went back out there later and momma was up on top of the cabinet and she didn't leave so I'm assuming she was guarding the other kitten who was sleeping in the dogloo. NO mommas or kittens in it this morning. I sprung it for the day and will try again tonight!

She may be onto us.

Tell me this... cat experts...

Isn't this tortie most probably female?

And is the orange one more probably male?

Just wondering.

Meanwhile, this little kitten is pretty wild but she's in immersion therapy now, watching us and the dogs and all this activity and we'll see how she does. Gidget's interested but I told her this one is not ready for her attention yet.

Someone over on the other forum picked up on the Adam and Even angle! Funny! I wish I’d thought of it!

We had thunder and lightning last night, so we got no sleep for awhile with Homer clawing us and Gidget barking.... this poor kitten.

T Storms were not on the forecast last night... of course they are NOW ;~\

Another pretty tortoise shell! I found another litter last week in the Himi’s house. That makes 3 litters from 2 mama's this year. 1st 2 litters of them are the old tom's that died last month, so I'm not parting with them. The tiny ones are reg., so I need to sell them.

I gave Talullah and Roberta a treat and 'Berta wanted Talullah's. She's trying to stare her down.

Yep, I think the odds of a male torti are pretty slim. I don't know about the odds of orange tabbies being male. All the ones I've ever known of or had have been female.

Tri-colors are almost always female. Very rare (I've never seen one) to be a tom.
Orange tabby can be either. You can look at their faces alot of the time and the females are “sweeter” looking. The largest one in my mulit-kitten pic is a tom and he has a “I'm the boss and I'm mad” expression. He is, too! His name is TOMCAT. His daddy's name was Rhett and Hal always called him that tomcat or Tom, so I saved myself the aggravation.

You got a cute bunch there, dogs included! Those kittens sure are pretty. I’d love one but since I’ve already got 3 cats in the house I think I’d be pushing my luck. It’s hard to find an open spot in the bed at night as it is! ;o)

Oh - well there goes my theory on the orange one then... I haven’t had a chance yet, to see his/her face.

I won 1st in Novice against 10, 1st in Spotted against 2, 4th out of 4th in Western Pleasure. She did perfect down to the very last 2 seconds when I backed her up and did the 360 degree turn. She went 1/2 way around, looked at the judge and locked down! I couldn't get her to move. Finally after what seemed like forever (dead silence and the judge telling me to kick her & where) I turned her the other way and she went, to my surprise! How embarrassing! I should have just bowed out, but we were already lined up at the end and I was just too embarrassed to want to call more attention.
Anyway, she redeemed herself and got 3rd in the Country Saddle Horse, and 2ond in the ladies flatshod. Deb Campbell got 1st on Charlie (speedracking standardbred) and she's pretty much unbeatable, so I was pleased to be 2ond against her at my 2ond show ever. They disqualified Nix on Whitey because in the Country Saddle horse because they said he was a speed racker. Nobody understood that on. No pics, forgot the camera. We spent ALL day at a car show for Hal and slapped some shampoo and water on Daisy and popped her in the trailer. I even forgot my shirts and Hal had to give me his for the western class. It was fun anyway. More people wanting Hal to “name his price” for Daisy. Hal told them I would stroke out.

Kari’s got a fully enclosed cat pen outside with a cat house in it, and since all she’s got is Himilayans, I assume that’s what she meant by “Himi house”.

My registered pair are in a 10x10 with a top and dog houses to keep the coyotes from getting them. Hal accidently let my Blue point 4yo female I raised out of the house a couple of weeks ago and she’s never been seen again. So sad.

Wow!! You done good!! Especially getting 1st out of 10 in Novice. But you get a BadDog for forgetting the camera! ;o)

Now if you could just carry Soldier to a show and get people to want you to name your price for Him!

I figured it was a nicer term than “cat house”! Too funny!

You know... I forgot, or failed to connect, that the little pregnant kitten who showed up here that died, she was orange.

That kitten is the reason I’m so focused on saving these before that can happen.

You should hear Hal telling the story of taking him to pull John's wagon. He's hilarious. I can't tell it like him. (MY VERSION) Hal went to the store and he and John decided to hook him to his wagon with Champ. John wanted an excuse to whip him and the "old farts" all took off and parked themselves under Jimmy's trees in lawn chairs to watch the "show". Meanwhile, Jimmy had just let a company spread "HUMAN WASTE" for fertilizer on 60 acres behind his house and some neighbors. More fuel for the farts! While they were sitting, waiting for Soldier to act up and get whipped, they were ROASTING Jimmy about the STENCH he has stirred up. (He wasn't the only one.) Jimmy just hitched up his mules and rode off without saying a word them calling out one-liners the whole time. Meanwhile, Soldier walked off pulling his wagon like he'd been doing it all his life! I wish I'd been there.

Soldier did eventually act up and John did spank him with a whip. He kicked the front of the wagon and his foot up in the wagon a few inches from Hal and broke the harness. Hal said he didn't know how he didn't bust the front out of the wagon. John said, "I just love this!"

No, she never had any. I kept her inside and never bred her. The middle sized 3 are her sisters kittens and the big one and the smallest 3 are her mama’s kittens. The old tom was a whole different mixed shorthair that was the same looking as the biggest kitten. He was part Ragdoll and I’d had the bloodline since 1982, so I didn’t want it to die out. They have sweet personalities and HUNT.

I told Hal to keep working him behind that wagon, and maybe we can sell him as a “SKILLED WAGON/BUGGY HORSE”. He needs a skill and RIDING AIN’t IT!

The tricolor/tortoiseshells are always female.

The gene for the tricolor (white on the body) is a sex-linked lethal. Since the males only get one X chromosome, if they get the tricolor gene, they die in utero or shortly after birth.

You will occasionally get a tricolor male, but they are XXY and sterile.

. . . got out of the cat breeding business years ago, but still remember some of the jargon.

Miss Ruby turned two yesterday, so it's time for hips, elbows, and eyes, as well as the blood test for EIC. Then we'll see if we're getting into the dog breeding business . . . .

. . . Ruby has been at a professional trainer's for a few weeks and he says she's doing really well. I decided if we're going to breed her she needs to do well in the performance world . . . . she's signed up for Working Certificate, Conformation Certificate, and the Junior Hunter test at the Labrador National Specialty (which is going to be here in October). Plus she'll have a tuneup and try for her first two Started Qualifying Scores in UKC at the Old South hunt test in September.

Miss Shelley, not to be outdone, is entered in the Labrador Specialty as well. If she passes both days, she will have her Junior Hunter title. She did very well in her first AKC hunt test so I have high hopes. She is also going to try for a couple of Seasoned passes in UKC. She is I think still a little shaky on her blind retrieves . . . but yesterday at the club Sporting Clays shoot several of us went off across the pasture and ran blinds, and Shelley did a **168 yard blind retrieve** across two hills and a dirt road. It was a memory blind because she ran to the same spot before, but if she'll go 168 yards I think I can push her to a 60 yard blind, which is all she's required to do in Seasoned.
