Queen Guitarist to Complete Doctorate

LONDON — Brian May is completing his doctorate in astrophysics, more than 30 years after he abandoned his studies to form the rock group Queen.

The 60-year-old guitarist and songwriter said he plans to submit his thesis, "Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud," to supervisors at Imperial College London within the next two weeks.

May was an astrophysics student at Imperial College when Queen, which included Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor, was formed in 1970. He dropped his doctorate as the glam rock band became successful.

Queen were one of Britain's biggest music groups in the 1970s, with hits including "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "We Will Rock You."

After Mercury's death in 1991, May recorded several solo albums, including 1998's "Another World." But his interest in astronomy continued, and he co-wrote "Bang! The Complete History of the Universe," which was published last year.

If he’s as talented a physicist and author as he is a musician, you can bet I’ll read his books.

Brian gets his doctorate.

Meanwhile, Freddy Mercury is NOT dead, he's just been reborn as a Kazakhstani journalist:

May was always a very underrated guitar player. His work, however, is as good as any rocker who ever strapped on a six string. Check out the song “Brighton Rock” on Queen’s third album for verification.

No kidding, a doctorate in astrophysics? Wow. I am impressed. Who knew he was hiding a mind like that under that '70s arena rock haircut?

“Not a combination of qualities you’d expect to see in, say, your average rapper.”

Say, why did you pick out “rapper?”

Not a combination of qualities you’d expect to see in, say, your average rapper.

Or your average rocker.

Unlike Borat/Sacha Baron Cohen, Freddie was actually fabulous and fabulously talented. I love Freddie’s beautiful voice.

In London a few weeks ago,I saw the West End production of “We Will Rock You”.Although I was never a Queen fan I thought it was outstanding.I think that one or more members of the group were involved in the production (consultants, artistic advisors, etc).

His guitar solo at the end of “We Will Rock You” has got to be one of tidiest piece of effortless six string ever recorded.

It's pretty amazing that he's able to pick it up again at such a high level after so many years. Getting a PhD requires publishing articles in peer reviewed journals on a topic that no one else has written about first. That's a lot harder to do in hard sciences than in ethnic studies programs.

There is another rocker who could also get a Doctorate if he put his mind to it. I am talking of none other than Doug Martsch of “Built To Spill.”
