Oh, I don't disagree that steroids contributed to this. Perhaps, like alcohol, they enhance whatever mindset was already there...in Benoit's case, the mindset of the "Canadian Crippler."

I mention the nickname because yesterday I read another wrestler, shocked over the deaths, describing the Benoit we saw on television as similar to Benoit in real life. Shocked? Really? The Benoit I remember on television was brutal, never smiling, jacked-up large (5'9" 215 is freakish for a 40-year-old when none of that is fat), missing a tooth, and went by "Canadian crippler" and "rabid wolverine."

People that never smile have an annoying/worrisome effect on me. If there was ANY non-cartoon-like wrestler who I hoped was nothing like his TV persona, it was Benoit.

I have heard he largely kept to himself, and sometimes that’s mistaken for arrogance or a misplaced intensity. Sometimes it is arrogance or a strange intensity. He clearly wasn’t a loner - he was widely respected in the business and had many friends in it, and a few close friends.

From what I know about wrestling, it’s probably best to keep to yourself and to keep your nose clean.
