In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
police state \puh-'lees - 'stayt \ noun
a political unit characterized by repressive governmental control of political, economic, and social life usually by an arbitrary exercise of power by police and especially secret police in place of regular operation of administrative and judicial organs of the government according to publicly known legal procedures
Example sentence:
George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four provides one of the best known fictional examples of a police state in all of literature.
Did you know?
(Courtesy of wikipedia) The term police state is a pejorative term for a state in which the government exercises rigid and repressive controls over the social, economic and political life of the population, especially by means of a secret police force which operates above the normal constraints found in a liberal democracy. A police state typically exhibits elements of totalitarianism and social control, and there is usually little distinction between the law and the exercise of political power by the executive. The classification of a country or regime as a police state is usually contested and debated. The classification is often established by an internal whistleblower or an external critic or activist group. The use of the term is motivated as a response to the laws, policies and actions of that regime, and is often used pejoratively to describe the regime's concept of the social contract, human rights, and similar matters. Like many pejorative terms, the use of the term "police state" to decry the perceived loss of "liberties" via new laws often diminishes one's argument against such laws to one of infantile complaining, much like the principle that the first one to call the other a "nazi" generally loses the debate.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Home from work and cooking dinner-
When I first heard “police state”
I thought of Orwell’s and Levin’s books
Now when I hear the same word
I think of ‘rat political crooks
They seem to be fond of the concept
Of controlling all of the time
Which is the only way to assure
That they get to your last dime
Whether it is queen Hillary or Obama
Or any of the rest of their bunch
They need to be put in their placers
And tossed out like yesterday’s lunch
Our bunco group only gets wild and crazy when we are indoors and alcohol is served...
I don't mind if Cook sits next to me. Even if he copies from my paper he'll spell all the words wrong.
Besides, what's the big deal about getting in trouble? It's not like we live in a police state or something.
Watch that hair stylist, and tell them to cease before they cut one hair shorter than what you want.
I do not let anyone trim my hair-I even trim the very top, which I keep short. The last time I went into a hairstyling place I was only there to take some paperwork to the owner who is on an HOA committee with me. She took the papers I gave her, and started telling me I should let her cut my hair from below my waist to just to my jawline because it was not fashionable for a woman my age to wear long hair. I told her no thank you, I like it this way, my husband likes it and I don’t want to look like the dyke who lives next door to me (Blondie the dyke has one of those chin-length bobs, bleached almost white). She gave me a scandalized look, but she has never mentioned chopping off my hair again. I really do look like a dyke with short hair, which was really a bummer when I was single.
It is clear and 74 out, and only down to the low 40’s tonight-time to go light the grill for some pork chops-back later...
With the current democrat control of the house, we live in a puh - leeeze state.
Good to see you, Moochie!
Cook, you behave yourself with new students. I'm going to have to spank you on Tuesday.
