Interesting Girl...But I'm going to stick with my British word roots for the "Cracker", the fact that Dickens used it in a court scene in England and Shakespeare used it in the Life of King John. King John's use is interesting in particular because the "Cracker" is an illegitimate son trying to get in on the action.

I went with an attorney for ten years. His private library was filled with books on English Law AND Shakespeare and Dickens.

I agree with you that it was a "private little thing" between Anna and Howard. I'll even give leeway and say that perhaps it had dual meanings.

That's one hell of a iresearch project. Kudos!/Sac

Rte great research!

As far as the ‘cracker’ goes...whether it be for the reasons outlines by Rte or the reason stated by Sac...it just seems to me that if it were named as such, for any of the reasons you’ve stated, doesn’t it seem like those reasons would be ‘over Anna’s head’? They definitely sound like reasons HKS would have wanted the name! Maybe he did, and knowing Anna was only going to be around for a short while longer, convinced her of the name and was able to convince her of some ‘easier’ meaning for ‘cracker’ as relates somehow to Daniel?

If I had started to list all the little and big statements and innuendoes that showed these two were *still* somehow believing in the Marshall pot of gold over the rainbow, it would’ve taken until Dannielynn turns 18!

I started to do it, but gave up and out. I know this isn’t worth it, but there is *something* to that boat name that would reveal a wealth of info if we could crack that nut.
