Word For The Day, Wednesday, March 21, 2007 - sidereal
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 03/21/2007 | The Janitor

Posted on 03/21/2007 5:44:20 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

sidereal • \sye-DEER-ee-ul\ • adjective

1. of or relating to stars or constellations *
2. measured by the apparent motion of the stars

* Indicates the sense illustrated by the example sentence.

Example sentence:

Few astronomers have witnessed the sidereal phenomenon of a supernova.

Did you know?
In Latin, the word for "heavenly body" is "sidus." Latin speakers used that word to form "desiderare" ("from a heavenly body") and "considerare" ("to think about a heavenly body"), which were adopted into English as "desire" and "consider." "Sidereal," another "sidus" creation, was first used in English in 1647. Thirty-four years later, an astronomer coined the phrase "sidereal year" for the time in which the earth completes one revolution in its orbit around the sun, measured with respect to the fixed stars. Not surprisingly, other sidereal measurements of time followed, including the sidereal month, the sidereal day, the sidereal hour, and even the sidereal minute.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Rush's show gets more sidereal today at 1 pm.

Why the liberal governor deigns to visit an 'irrelevant' talk show host, I'll never know.

sidereal-I think a sidereal was used on this observation.
See the target?
The learned men of astronomy searched the heavens wide
Using this method to measure one by the apparent motion of the stars
What the one is -is a mystery to me,
but the learned men of astronomy have a handle on it using the sidereal.
I think it's really a side rail in outer space to hold onto so you don't lose your place.

!

So true!

The two angles (elevation from the plane of the earth's orbit, and the angle from Aries' rising on Mar 21 ) combine to give you the location of any point in the sky's sphere: So your "side rail" analogy is exactly right, its the "handle" astronomers use to keep a grip on their stars. 8<)

Judging by her picture, even the "I'd hit it" and "what's the crime" freeper crowd would say "Definitely Guilty"

It seems like there is a story like this weekly here in Houston. I guess they are hiring folks now saying "the pay is lousy but the perks are great"

Yeah, I know that was a disgusting comment

is society just more depraved than it was? bc while i think it went on back in the day, i don't think it was THIS prevalent!

Actually I think it has always gone on. When I was in Junior High School there was a rumor that one of the coaches was boffing a girl, or two. He was very flirty with all of us and we were all of 13 at the time.

A little of both. The media certianly plays up these kinds of stories and once local items are now broadcast nationwide.
