The alleged murder/mystery death took place prior to the man/woman marraige ceremony.
Heck if it were that easy we would see the marraige ceremonies increasing big time here in the US.

I don't think so. He knew and knows the commitment ceremony wasn't a legal marriage. He was just trying to explain why they didn't do the legal thing at the time. He knows there is no marital privilege regarding testifying at Daniel's inquest, even if they DID get legally married. He was not sure of it at the time of the commitment ceremony and did not want people to say they got married, legally, just to avoid testifying at Daniel's inquest.
