That has been puzzling to me.
He slept downstairs when ANS slept with other men upstairs, he slept on a cot in the corner of the hospital room when Larry was sleeping in the room with Anna.

It also explains Anna's feelings or feeling "safe" with Stern. I don't mean as in sexually safe but gay men are typically highly trusted friends to females who have no problem with having gay men as friends, normally the female will trust her gay men friends more than she would trust her female friends. I don't think Anna felt 100% comfortable with straight men ever.

Have you ever seen her schtick on the time she met Anna? It was hilarious. "ohhh, i thought they were taters".
