Something is going on. The weather. You have very stable upper air and conditions just perfect for making contrails. Thus more contrails made, which don't dissipate.
That is likely the extent of it.

Most of the San Francisco to NE US flights pass over there, of course there are lots of contrails.

It's the atmosphere- at any given time there are more than enough aircraft over your head in Ohio to fill the sky with contrails were atmospheric conditions perfect. Such perfect conditions don't happen every day so you're just not used to it. On most days- most are imperfect days for contrail formation- you just don't notice the planes passing overhead.
Is Art Bell still alive and on the same topic he was on 8 yrs ago or something?

Contrails form in moist, cold air. The jet engines add to the moisture and it condensates into the contrail.
When the conditions are right, you get lots of them and they stick around a long time if the air "up there" (20k feet or more) isn't moving fast.
You aren't getting "sprayed" with "chemtrails".

I've seen them once, just as you describe them, over the Detroit area. Disregarding the "contrails", what I found odd was the flight pattern....all due east and west, and pretty evenly spaced north to south.....not at all the normal flight paths for airliners I normally see from here. The day that I saw this was in November. Never before or since.

If they are stationary, they are likely contrails of moisture.
If they are spreading but still visible, then you have chemical trails.

Reports on TAM of military air traffic being scrambled, planes going straight UP like rockets, somebody sent e-mail saying that nothing has taken off or landed at Hopkins since noon, activity reported throughout N.E. Ohio to to Michigan.
As far as the contrails, they do not appear to be in the normal air traffic corridors, and in a lot of cases they make grids and X's.
Listen live at WTAM or get the podcast tomorrow.
Update - "Airport thingie's fine" - direct quote from Allison. I guess the planes are flying.
